My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

High-class interior meets innovation-free exterior design. The new Audi A4 tells us, here comes more of the same, although it is packed with the latest technology, the Volkswagen-Group has to offer. Surprisingly weak performance at the handling-track during the shortlist-test given its premium-attitude and pricing.

BMW 7 Series

The BMW 7-series brings modern in-car luxury to a new level. More possibilities to leave your fingerprints on numerous touch-screens than ever, but also some gimmicky features like a way to big digital device standing in as car-key, doing the job the owners smart-phone could easily handle.

Jaguar XE

The best handling of all cars in the line-up, the Jaguar XE earns its reputation as a pure drivers car. A very tight cabin and a still small choice of engines and no derivatives like a station-wagon available block it from storming further up the list. Mazda MX-5 Mazda shows us once again: It takes just a small car to have big fun driving it. Simple but clever solutions (handling of the canvas-top!), a focus on the essentials of driving-fun (gear-box!) and classic front-engine rear-wheel-drive layout with driving-fun due to a lightweight-body instead of a big, high-performance engine, makes the MX-5 the king of hearts on the road.

Opel Astra

Cut back size and weight, nevertheless offer more space in the cabin, add state of the art engines and agile handling plus available options so far only known from the luxury segment in an affordable compact-car, pair it with impeccable design and smart interior solutions – and you will get a winner. So did Opel with the new Astra to make it my personal car of the year, as a value-for-money-allrounder out of a shortlist of high-class competitors.

Skoda Superb

Most car for the money on the list, the new Superb offers not only the most spacious interior and clever solutions like the umbrella-slots in the doors, but also a surprisingly sporty, yet comfortable ride. Some weak points like more wind noise as its technological brothers from VW and Audi may be digested by a look on the price-tag.

Volvo XC90

The only SUV on the shortlist is a very sophisticated example of these kind of cars, which after all proofs, that half of the cylinders one would imagine under it‘s hood can be sufficient. A luxurious package, elegant and timeless design and a very smooth ride earn it a place on the podium.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Audis new middle class does not necessarily turn people`s heads and somehow you would have expected more courage. So, the new A4 prefers to surprise with intrinsic values, what it perfectly succeeds in – for example, with the digital cockpit. High-end finish and ergonomics are Benchmark.

BMW 7 Series

The new Seven has undoubtedly taken over regency in the prestige class. The big BMW that has considerably lost weight and remains a driver´s car among the luxury cars. The new gesture recognition control among others is cutting-edge and some assistant Systems anticipate the future.

Jaguar XE

The cat is back in the middle class, the XE is, undoubtedly, an interesting alternative. The exquisite handling is the biggest suprise. The low line causes restritcted space in the rear seats. The handling of the touchscreen-infortainment is a bit complicated, there ar some minor weaknesses in the details.

Mazda MX-5

Is driving still fun? Silly question: of course, it is! And no car offers more pleasure than the classic Japanese cult car. The youngest generation hasn´t lost any of the fascination of it`s predecessors and sticks to all the assets – short, light-weigth and affordable. Some other car-makers build in motoring pleasure Switches. The Mazda MX–5 is sheer motoring pleasure, which you can experience without any Switch.

Opel Astra

It deserves admiration how hard Opel has worked for a comeback for the last few years. It has definitely paid, Opel is back. And it is the new Astra that stands for the new era and has made the marque profitable again. Light, more spacious and efficient and linked with the world, this Opel claims leadership in the most competitive segment. Rightly, I think.

Skoda Superb

For a long time Skoda has built surprising cars with solid technology and attractive prices. In the next round the new Superb of the Czech Volkswagen daughter meets the players in the Champions League at eye-level for the first time. Skoda´s big one is not only a piece of design, but scores with quality and business-class interior. And the estage wagon is the Superb´s top version: this spaciousness can not be exceeded by any competitor.

Volvo XC90

The performance and the coolness of the new flagship deserves respect: modern appearance and high-class interior, but the car lacks suspension adjustment. The table-style touchscreen in the cockpit gives reason for criticism: it is hardly self-explanatory and tricky to use. And the price is not a bargain, either.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

This family car would of course merit a lot more points if it didn’t suffer from being compared to its cousin at Skoda. Having more space and being cheaper, all the while offering a fabrication quality that is just as exceptional, the Superb does put the A4 in the shade. A more prestigious name and the optional quattro transmission don’t compensate for it.

BMW 7 Series

Apart from an aerodynamic noise problem caused by the rear view mirrors, is there anything else at fault with this luxury sedan? Nothing… apart from a sales price that disqualifies it from my point of view. I would have preferred that BMW made a few economies with the technology – sometimes superfluous or even useless – to make it available to more people.

Jaguar XE

If it offered rear seats with more room and that were more accessible, I would have put this new ‘little’ Jaguar right at the top of my list for 2016. Its slightly rough new 2-litre diesel engine convinced me to give it ‘only’ my second score. But what an excellent car, beautiful, comfortable, powerful, and especially really pleasant to drive!

Mazda MX-5

Giving my best score to a roadster is obviously daring! But it’s my way to pay tribute to Mazda, one of the manufacturers who think the most about driving pleasure. A notion that is sometimes forgotten… or that heads in a direction that I do not like. This new MX-5 represents all that I like about cars: lightness, fun and useful technology.

Opel Astra

I was hesitating for a while to give it my best score. Even though it’s a small revolution for Opel, this new Astra hasn’t become the gold standard of its category. It is in the top leaders, but hasn’t shown enough progress in my eyes to make the difference.

Skoda Superb

If its German cousin hadn’t been elected car of the year 2015, this Superb would have had an easier job during this 2016 election. A more spacious type of Passat, more stylish and affordable, it merits being chosen for this selection. No doubt that if it had already been commercialised at the end of 2014, it would have put the famous VW in the shade!

Volvo XC90

With the MX-5 and the XE, it’s my other favourite of the year. The XC90 might not be in line with certain truths concerning economy or mobility, but I fell for its really personal style, its comfortable interior and technologies that I would call innovative.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

An excellent car, as well in technical expertise as in feel and finish. But for me there’s a cruel lack of personality, as well visually as in driving. The car is superbly finished, the instrument cluster is one of the most advanced of the moment, but the rest is fairly mainstream and maybe a little dull or too well known to the enthousiasts.

BMW 7 Series

Finally a limousine which closes the gap for BMW with Mercedes if we talk about comfort an smooth drivability. Apart from the fact that the car comes with a number of technical innovations or novelties worth experiencing and it hasn’t lost its typical BMW driving stance. But it’s very expensive and visually does not stand out of the (upper) crowd.

Jaguar XE

A magnificent car to drive. Only in this way can challenger Jaguar make the difference with the supposedly untouchable Germans from Audi, BMW and Mercedes. The car doesn’t only drive very well, it looks gorgeous on the outside, the interior lay-out is somewhat disappointing as is the finish in some places. Biggest drawback: the space for passengers in the rear.

Mazda MX-5

Simple ideas will always prevail. The MX-5/Miata was a gem at its first appearance in 1989, the fourth generation goes back to these basic principles of an open fun to drive car for a very reasonable price. Especially as the basic 1.5 has enough oomph to provide all the pleasure you want and the 2 litre is trickier on the limit. Keep it simple and enjoy.

Opel Astra

In a car segment where the competition is fierce, Opel has succeeded in creating a successor to its popular Astra which is innovating (weight reduction, connectivity, lighting …) and serious value for money, especially when you take into account that one of the basic cars, the 1.0 T is also one of the nicest. A refreshing view on Opels to come?

Skoda Superb

A superb car (no pun intended) that is roomier and cheaper than the previous COTY (2015) and shares all its technology. Last year it would have been my winner, now it’s unfortunately a bigger and nicer looking Passat. Which is good, but just not enough to be my winner. Sometimes your (half) brothers can be your enemies…

Volvo XC90

First of all I have to admit I’m not a big fan of SUV’s, but apparently the world proves me wrong. But if I wanted to have or need one, the XC90 would certainly on my buying list, offering room for seven, interesting technology and connectivity and that Scandinavian flair I like. But I will be waiting for smaller, even more intelligent cars from Volvo on the same technical base.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Audi`s latest generation key model A4 relies on sophisticated and well-matched mechanical hardware, dynamic yet economical engines and state of the art technologies including even Matrix LED headlights and fully digital instrument panel. An exceptionally low drag and versatile connectivity including broadband Internet must not be omitted.

BMW 7 Series

The flagship of BMW brand shows that even a luxurious saloon can be distinctive, exceptionally comfortable, agile and enjoyable at the same time, even in the prolonged variant. Partly composite structure reduces the weight; you can enjoy premium materials and precision processing to the very last detail. An inexhaustible range of extra features is a promise of first class traveling.

Jaguar XE

A specific choice in the compact premium sedans, the best of the reborn Jaguar Land Rover company. A noticeably sporty accent, that matadors of the class regrettably keep abandoning, stands out in the driving characteristics. Brilliant driving performance, particularly with supercharged three-litre six-cylinder engine. Latest JLR multimedia systems included.

Mazda MX-5

The world`s most successful roadster of all times in its latest generation sets new standards of driving pleasure. Mazda engineers created a technological jewel, unmistakably open compact car with rear-wheel drive, lightweight design and a perfect balance between the axles. Naturally aspirated engines, precise shifting and steep steering contribute to unique experience.

Opel Astra

Modern and harmonious car that is accessible to a broad audience without any significant deficiencies. It is a great ride even in its cheapest version; the three-cylinder 1.0 Turbo engine belongs among the best of its kind. Astra brings special equipment to the segment and an unprecedented range of elements contributing to the ride comfort of the driver and passengers.

Skoda Superb

The most advanced technology of the VW Group including MQB platform, engines and electronic safety and comfort features. Ideological successor of Ford Scorpio or Opel Omega offers a comfortable ride, original design, extensive equipment and impressive interior space at an unbeatable price. Plenty of really smart solutions for a pleasant daily use.

Volvo XC90

A proud representative of an entirely new architecture, a unique design and mechanical groups, which will soon be common to all Volvo cars. Especially the plug-in hybrid variant (T8) suggests the future of crossovers in terms of careful energy management and unlimited possibilities of online networking. The greatest visionary of all the finalists.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The overall impressions of the new Audi A4 is so much better than most of the competitors in this segment. The quality of interior, engines, gearboxes and other mechanical issues are so impressive that you simply can’t stop smile when you drive this car. I still miss some options for drivetrains such as plug-in – but let’s see what the future brings…

BMW 7 Series

In many ways the 7-series is a masterpiece of the automobile technology. But to me the car is too much of everything, and it brings the price so high that the 7-serie is most of all a nice dream rather than a realistic solution.

Jaguar XE

This car looks great. The new diesel engines are well working, and in many aspects the car is really good. Jaguar is moving fast forward, and the brand really deserves to be in this fine group of excellent cars.

Mazda MX-5

Since the Mk I Mazda MX-5 has always managed to charm and convince. It is really fun to drive this car, and to me this nice feature brings in the car as a natural finalist. But in the end the MX-5 is too much a niche in order to be ‘Car of the Year’.

Opel Astra

Opel Astra: This car provides a fantastic combination of practicality, safety and enjoyable driving characteristics. Together with an affordable price and a wide model program and together with a lot of well running engines the Opel Astra is to me a true winner. No Plug-in option brings Astra one point below the maximum.

Skoda Superb

It is really good to see how Skoda continues the progress in order to move upwards in quality and in usability. The Superb drives well and the model program covers many interesting technical solutions. But even though the Superb has moved, it does not lead the technical progress.

Volvo XC90

Volvo still manages to bring safety to a new level, and together with the idea of combining a big car with a series of small engines and new electrified drivetrains Volvo meets the new demands for the automotive industry in a really convincing way. In addition the car is fabulous to drive.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The external design of Audi A4 is even too cautious. but the cockpit is modern and functional. Packaging is not very innovative, resulting in a quite tight cabin and trunk. Optional extras are pretty expensive. However, all the other features of A4 are close to perfect. A Quattro version also won this year`s Winter Car comparison test in Tekniikan Maailma.

BMW 7 Series

BMW 7 series is a breathtaking car packed with hi-tech features, just like a new German business class limousine should be. It is a pleasure to drive with and to travel in, especially the LWB version with all the extras. Unfortunately only a few privileged are able to experience that.

Jaguar XE

In this segment the competition is fierce but Jaguar XE is a welcome alternative to the traditional German brands. XE is a true driver`s car. Especially its steering is delightful. The sound of the supercharged V6 engine is thrilling and the upcoming four-wheel drive versions give more choice.

Mazda MX-5

It is a true relief that someone still dares to design and manufacture a reasonably priced sports car whose main objective is to deliver sheer driving pleasure. Mazda MX-5 is true to its roots. The driver really feels to be part of the car and close to the road and nature. However, steering could be even more precise and “roominess” is not an adjective that you could combine with MX-5.

Opel Astra

Opel Astra is a sound vehicle with remarkable improvents in all areas compared to its predecessor. The weight is now on the same level with main competitors, cabin is much roomier, engines are modern and the driver`s interface is user-friendly. Most importantly, the new Astra gives excellent value for money.

Skoda Superb

Skoda Superb`s latest edition has again overflow of space both in the cabin and in the trunk. Model range is vast, design has improved and the car has several neat details. All in all, it is hard to tell what could be much better. Also in this case the value for money is obvious. Superb gives hard time to Volkswagen Passat.

Volvo XC90

Volvo XC90 is a powerful showpiece of Volvo`s new era. Completely new architecture, cool design and the bold choice to use only four-cylinder engines gives XC90 a corner of its own in the large SUV segment. It is enjoyable to drive, too. The T8 plug-in-hybrid gives an example of good packaging: hardly no shrinkage of the boot volume despite the large battery.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The Audi family sedan manages once again to progress in performance, while reducing fuel consumption. Comfort has also increased. What a pity that its design appears frozen. We would like such an innovative style that his virtual cockpit. There are sedans cheaper or more habitable, but in terms of manufacturing quality and technological sophistication, this Audi A4 fears nobody.

BMW 7 Series

What a demonstration! This sixth generation BMW 7 Series succeeds in giving a taste of the autonomous car, while becoming the most exciting limousine to drive. With economic 740 Hybrid and powerful M760Li, the Bavarian engineers provide stunning evidence of their talent. Only regret, his price is too high to give it first place it deserves.

Jaguar XE

This Jaguar XE is able to make us forget the failure of the X-Type. Its design is really beautiful and aerodynamic efficiency is exceptional. Its ride is exciting but its weight remains high, despite the use of aluminum. We also regret the lack of refinement of its diesel engine and an interior finish that does not equal that of German premium brands.

Mazda MX-5

Our favorite is this adorable little Japanese roadster. The fourth-generation MX-5 is modernizing but do not forget the basics of driving. Starting with lightness. This model is certainly not very versatile, but it demonstrates that a manufacturer is still able to make a small sports car affordable and exciting to drive in 2016. Thanks to Mazda remind us.

Opel Astra

What progress! The style of the fifth Astra evolves smoothly, its lines are stretched and finesse increased. At the same time, it lost 120 kg to 200 kg, and has won more efficient engines. The gap is filled with the Golf, but only in part because it still lacks four wheel drive and hybrid versions. Too bad it lost the damping control it was the first to use.

Skoda Superb

The Skoda Superb has never deserved its name as well. The great Czech sedan is still one of the most spacious in its class. Very well made, it has the advantage of being also available in break and it benefits mainly the excellent engines of the Volkswagen Group. If it had been marketed before the Passat, I would probably put it a better rating.

Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 is a large SUV that is not particularly cheap. I nevertheless consider it differs from its rivals and it brings a lot of news in the category, enough to make it my favorite choice this year. Chinese owners have not distorted the Swedish brand. Instead, they gave him the means of its ambitions. The proof is made by an elegant and refined SUV that does not just copy the German model.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The “new” Audi A4 evolves a little bit outside, but adopts some new high-tech technologies onboard. But she joins however in the continuation of an existing model, without revolutionizing anything, especially in her style.

BMW 7 Series

When a new 7-Series is launched, i always ask myself “what is will be able to add this time this in a car which is already so complete”. And they found. the 7-Series is a iconic limousine, with a high level of technology, security and price…

Jaguar XE

Jaguar managed to preserve its DNA and makes a noticed new entrance in the category. The XE is a good success outside and behind the steering wheel, and its manufacturing pleads in its favor. But the inside is lacking originality and seems already exceeded, face of some very aggressive competitors.

Mazda MX-5

MX-5 remains one of the roadsters the most desirable youngs of the automobile planet. But it is always difficult to replace an icon… This new generation makes efforts, and brings a more aggressive, new style. But the quality of interior seems to be “light” regarding to the current standards.

Opel Astra

With the “old” Astra, Opel came by far, but openly made a success of this new generation. Lightness, quality of construction, enjoyment of driving, and well thought motorizations are considerable qualities. It is for me the car of the year, even if it is always easier to replace an exceeded model.

Skoda Superb

Skoda Superb is globally a good car but it brings nothing new in the category. She resumes the best elements of several models of the volkswagen group already launched on other models.

Volvo XC90

The new XC90 replaces a twelve-year-old old model. The brand appears as piece of news since the arrival of the Chinese Geely, while new models knew how to stay in the Swedish spirit. The XC90 is the first model of one length high-end lineage of Volvo, capable of competing with Audi, with BMW and with Mercedes.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The A4 is for sure one of the best family sedan on the market today. It is more refined than the Jaguar XE inside, but also less fun to drive, and not as comfortable as the Mercedes C-Class with pneumatic springs launched last year.

BMW 7 Series

The amount of technology that the BMW flagship is packing is astonishing. For example the carbon fiber reinforced structure is quite a “tour de force”. Though if the car appears dynamically very competent, it makes the driver feel too disconnected from the road, and finally wanting an even more autonomous car, which is odd for a BMW.

Jaguar XE

JLR engineers were not bragging, they really turned the XE in the best driver`s sedan of its time: the handling is superb. Though you could expect a more refined interior for a Jaguar, and a less vibrating 4 cylinder diesel.

Mazda MX-5

The MX-5 is the epitome of the sports car: light, agile, directly linked to your feet and hands, you drive it with the seat of your pants. It is a convertible, able to transform every trip into an unforgettable journey. Beautifully crafted yet affordable! The perfect enthusiast car…

Opel Astra

The Astra improvements over the previous generation are huge. It is higly connected and its value for money remains quite remarkable. Yet it is not as competent on the road as some of its rivals already on the market for some time.

Skoda Superb

The Superb is a very competent family hatch, the roomiest of its kind. The estate version called Combi is even more practical thanks to its enormous trunk capacity. But in my opinion it is not different enough from the VW Passat it shares its platform with.

Volvo XC90

A big SUV can be eco friendly, while being practical. At least the XC90 can, whose plug-in hybrid T8 version can be driven 43 km on pure electric mode, accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in 5,6 seconds when you need it and transport a family of 7. Quite an achievement!

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Because of the underwhelming diesel-gate, justifiable suspicion will stay a while when appraising a new product from VW-Audi. However, this new A4 is very impressive. Saving on its traditionnal assets (quality, choice of engines and transmissions, hi-tech contents, long-lasting design …), this sedan and its estate had also adjusted some of the former A4 weaknesses (smoother ride, greater agility…). Also, its virtual cockpit is a flattering and useful demonstration of modernity. But selling prices, endless list of expensive options and costs to run will often make the best A4 variants reserved solely for the whealthiest customers.

BMW 7 Series

It is not that often that a bizz-jet is hitting the car market. This 7-serie tick all the boxes expected from a state-of-the art limousine. BMW has even discovered that touchscreen do exist, demonstrating itself how confused its i-drive system still is. For sure, it is fair that the 7-serie reached this final round. But price, TCO, size or behaviour quickly pull this BMW away from an every-day use perspective.

Jaguar XE

In the ferocious family premium segment, the brand new XE is a solid contender despite Jaguar being off this market for so long. The sound and response of the V6 is great, the handling is lively and the 2.0 Diesel sober enough. But, compare to competitors –not only the german-, the XE shows a lack of modernity (old fashionned dials, average IHM…), quality (plastics, assembling..), comfort (ride, poor roominess, noisy diesel, raucous stop/start…) and flair (dull interior, conservative material…). But, for sure, Jaguar is already learning for the next XE.

Mazda MX-5

For sure the new MX-5 is not the perfect family car. But it is a car that many families deserve. From the youngest driver to the wiser of the clan, this Mazda will offer pure joy to drive, enough comfort and practical aspects, very decent IHM and more than enough digital gizmo. Gearbox is perfect and engines powerfull enough. Also, design for this ND generation is ideally agressive and well balanced. Above all, the MX-5 is a true connected car… maybe not to the Cloud but to the very man (or woman) who’ll pay for it : its driver.

Opel Astra

For customers quitting the former Astra, this new generation is a brave new world. But if they expect the supreme handling and ride of a Peugeot 308, the finish of a VW Golf, the confort of a Citroën C4, the digital interface of the new Renault Megane or its price/equipment ratio, they will be disapointed. Also, this Opel do not offer the reassuring multi-years warranty of a korean compact nor the resale value of a trusted brand. And because of some tensions between Opel and its french dealers network, the customer may not necesseraly be the priority if any problem arise.

Skoda Superb

Offering most of a VW Passat with an even roomier cabin, a sharper exterior design and a much better value/money ratio is not innovative but pragmatic. Then, Superb –especially its estate variant- could be the right car for a family who don’t want –or can’t afford- a large MPV or SUV. Unfortunatly for Skoda, the very last french who spent their own money on such sedan or break, rather go to the new Renault Talisman (better IHM, huge network, extraordinary handling and safety with the 4Control option…) or a more appealing badge.

Volvo XC90

Despite a retro-cubist exterior design burdened by teutonic surfaces –bring the XC60 slightness back, please-, this huge Volvo is a must have… if you want a SUV and can afford this XC90. Which is not easy for most people because of a 50 000 euros starting price. Not to speak about the very mediatic plug-in hybrid T8 variant priced above 84 000 euros. Nevertheless, comfort, innovative and smooth IHM, quality, roominess, versatility, of course safety and even handling are all reaching a level never reached on a Volvo. Neither on many competitors.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Can a car be brilliant and boring at the same time ? The A4 is both and it is a strange sensation. The trim is beautiful and the external design highly sophisticated but the A4 is exactly what you expected to find. The A4 is a far too much pedictable car and its style has become really cold. A premium car deserves top-technology, efficiency, performance and Audi has all of this. But such a car deserves emotion, too.

BMW 7 Series

The new 7 Series copes with its reputation of being highly innovative. It has not always been a whole success but, this time, the new model manages to introduce simultaneously many high-tech devices really operative. The 7 Series is a smartcar but remains very exciting to drive, with engines able to make you forget about its weight. Unfortunately, the exterior design doesn`t achieve the same performance.

Jaguar XE

Aiming to become an alternative choice to the german best-sellers, the XE is developing a consistent strategy. The car has the engines it needs, remarkable handling (thanks to its chassis) and comfort. But the ergonomics are not perfect and the Jaguar-style too shy. Maybe the benchmarking went too far ? The XE is a revolution for Jaguar but not for the segment.

Mazda MX-5

Fun, fun, fun… The MX-5 sings the same song since 1989 but the beat is somewhat different. The chassis is more sophisticated, stiffer and yet the car is more confortable and it`s still exciting to have your hands on the steering wheel. The MX-5 didn`t have to be much more powerful or practical but had to remain affordable. Leaving behind the neo-retro style, the new generation remains faithful to the roadster spirit and dedicated to a minority. More than ever, the car-culture needs these kind of vehicle.

Opel Astra

The Astra is back. Lighter, with a sense of detail and a good level of equipment. This car is an expression of the recovery of the Opel brand. Apart from the suspensions, which could be improved, and some of the material among the trim, it`s uneasy to criticise a car that makes so much efforts for being as efficient and consensual as possible. But for its part, the Astra finds it uneasy to make your heart beat faster.

Skoda Superb

Based on the MQB platform, the Superb can rely on an excellent DNA basis. This is an asset and, at the same time, a problem. Obviously the brand is not allowed to take the best of it, specially in handling and suspensions. As often with a Skoda, I had the feeling of driving a restrained car. The new Superb is better than the previous model but it does not widen its ambition.

Volvo XC90

Yes, it`s massive, expensive and not specifically designed for the Old Europe but the XC90 is a series model with an avant-garde profile. It`s a SUV with a first-class level of confort and handling regarding it`s weight. The plug-in model, even if it needs to be recharged quite often, highlights interesting features, and not only regarding consumption. Last but not least, the « Scandinavian » atmosphere of the interior is a model of its kind, with clever ergonomics.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Despite the “Dieselgate”, Volkswagen Group has an incredible success. Audi, the famous “premium” subsidiary of the German carmaker upgrades its bread and butter A4. With timeless styling and solid interiors, the new Audi is recognizable among all others, more rigorous than ever, homogeneous with fantastic engines like the V6 TDi. Elegant, even luxurious in the upper end of the line-up, with up-to-date technologies, reassuring, very fun to drive with low consumption, the new A4 is almost a perfect car, with only minor faults such as a lack of roominess. Selling prices are a bit exaggerated.

BMW 7 Series

A high-end luxury car. With revolutionary technological innovation. The 7 Series provides tremendous performance and a very quiet ride. Safe, pleasant to drive, with effective powertrains and exceptional efficient engines with quite low consumptions, it is a marvelous limousine for wealthy people. Luxury, space, elegance and refinement on board. But the car is too expensive to become a Car of the year.

Jaguar XE

Road holding is excellent with precise steering. Its driving dynamic handling is very much appreciated, specially on twisty roads. Long trips are a pure formality, with quite good comfort. Under the Tata rule, Jaguar Land Rover has made a lot of progress. Nevertheless, we are less enthusiastic about the new engines. They still lack a little bit of refinement. Its built quality is less impressive than in the German cars. And, last but not least, our preference still goes to classic Jaguar styling such as used on the previous so British S-Type.

Mazda MX-5

Original, sensual, it reminds us of the British and Italian sports cars of the 60s without their defects. Precise, agile, the MX-5 is a very attractive toy for the enthusiasts. The Japanese carmaker knows how to build specific and exquisite products. This Mazda has a sure-footed handling but neglects ride comfort. It is a second or third car for fun. Too unpleasant (noise, zero functionality…) for a daily usage.

Opel Astra

It is the best Astra ever. We congratulate Opel engineers. But suspensions are not that smooth on bad roads. Steering is not so precise and engines lack refinement under 1.500 rpm. A VW Golf or a Peugeot 308 are more homogenous.

Skoda Superb

Sure enough, it is merely a long wheelbase Passat. But, in the end, this gives the roomiest car of the category, versatile, pretty comfortable, ergonomically designed. With solid interiors and a classical design without eccentricity, that will not age prematurely. Welcome on board. The best choice for the value-conscious family. To the driver, this car feels like a Passat, less sporty but not boring. Outstanding value for money.

Volvo XC90

It is a King Size SUV, well-thought, comfortable with a warm interior, full of personality. A fantastic example of Scandinavian design, luminous and friendly. Despite the dimensions, its driving pleasure proves to be outstanding, with sophisticated engines, particularly the Plug-in hybrid version. But, planned first for the American market, it is too large for narrow roads and streets in Europe. Ergonomics is pretty puzzling and safety functions are very, very exasperating. Impossible to switch them off. We do not appreciate being bossed around by a car a car who should obey our command. The quest for increased safety is no excuse for annoying the driver.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Audi has probably the most beautiful interior. The A4 drives very well, although a little bit too unspecatcular. Inside it is quiet and the drivers seat position is very good. The virtual cockpit is an option, a spectacular one. Wide range of engines, but until now no hybrid. Exterior design is without any seduction. The A4 is technical a nearly perfect car, but it misses the “must have” factor.

BMW 7 Series

I dont like the design. BMW looses its unspectacular convincing cool lines, which the Mercedes S Class stands for and former BMW had as well. But the new 7 Series drives great. It feels so light while on the road, you hardly believe you are in a heavy luxury car. And again BMW offers innovation like gesture control and remote parking – although in an early stage and far away from perfection, but in some years time, these things will become common like the idrive button. Hybrid engine as an option. Despite the price my 2nd place.

Jaguar XE

The Jaguar is a car which confuses me. It is pure fun to drive with the gasoline engine, a real rival to the BMW 3 series. But with the diesel it is disappointing – rough, loud, no fun at all. The interior is ok, but not as fine as in the Audi. And roominess is obviously not the thing, the engineers looked at their first priority. The legroom in the secoond row is poor. Aluminium, all wheel drive and 3 year warranty on the positive side. Overall a good effort and a good choice, if you want to drive outside the mainstream, but not enough for the Top 3.

Mazda MX-5

From the very first MX5 on i fell in love with this car. It was great fun to drive and it is still nowadays. The newest generation has kept all the seduction – but what else? It is a car like the generation before, it is still very small inside, uses a lot of plastic and offers this time an exterior design, which exagarates. The new Mazda MX 5 is a brilliant toy, but no car of the year.

Opel Astra

Nobody offers more value for money, if you are looking for a car with nearly endless space. The roominess is spectacular. It looks like solid work, but thats it. If you drive first the Skoda and directly after the Audi, you feel the huge difference. They both are from Volkswagen, but they are not at all the same. The Skoda drives unspectcular, even a little bit rigid. Good variety of engines, but no hybrid. The new Superb stands in perfect tradition to the generation before, but it does not contribute to the progress of the automobile. Despite the price not my car of the year.

Skoda Superb

Volvo XC90

What a stunning successor to the iconic XC90. Volvo has taken (too) many years, the result is overwhelming. Beautiful Design exterior and even more interior, great safety features, comfortable seats, hybrid option – excellent Job. The decision to offer only four cylinder engines is a result of financial restrictions even though Volvo tells everybody, it is one of rationality. Some minor critics: If you hit the road, the engine cries. I miss the five cylinder. Driving comfort on the rear axle could be smoother. The touchscreen menu is complicated. Thats it. It is now expensive like Audi, but the waiting list is long, so Volvo took the proper decision. The new XC 90 is just great and my car of the year 2016.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

In my eyes the A4 is the most complete car among the finalists. The finish sets the standard in the segment, and I like the cinemascope-like Virtual Cockpit a lot. What you get is great ride characteristics, optional four wheel drive and two body styles as well as a wide range of driver assistance systems and a variety of efficient engines. Some may perceive the design as uninspired, to me it looks appealingly pure. My this year’s favourite, although the price might be a little bit scary.

BMW 7 Series

This truly expensive luxury sedan is a showcase of what is possible in current automotive engineering. You may discuss whether innovations like remote control parking or the display key are indispensable, but certainly they ease a motorist’s life and I’m sure we’ll find something like gesture control in cheaper cars one day, simply because it‘s a progress in terms of safety. The 7-series‘ product line comprises a 12-cylinder but also plug-in hybrid, hence here comes no yesterday’s dinosaur at all.

Jaguar XE

The XE offers an innovative aluminium chassis and really great looks outside. Inside not so much: In comparison to competitors like the A4 with its Virtual Cockpit the interior is not completely up to date and also the finish seems less convincing. The level of driving pleasure is high, but not groundbreaking. However, the XE paves the way into the Jag universe and does so at an attractive price.

Mazda MX-5

It’s good to see a „non-rational“ car like this among the finalists. This small, light weight and rear driven roadster sports great handling and a real exciting drive. A fun car at its best, something to go for especially in summer. But there’s not that crucial step forward – that’s why I can’t consider the MX-5 as a Car of the Year.

Opel Astra

A big progress compared to the predecessor. Smaller outside but more roomy inside, weight loss, nice engines like the 1.0-l/3-cylinder, up-to-date driving dynamics and comfort, an infotainment that invites the smartphone perfectly into the car. Affordable, and an appealing station wagon waiting in the wings. But: No FlexRide, no four wheel drive.

Skoda Superb

Great value for money, enormous roominess, solid build quality, convincing equipment levels and a wide range of drivetrains come with save and solid driving manners, an optional 4WD and the choice between sedan and station: Actually you couldn’t think of a more reasonable car. What’s missing is something outstanding, is emotion and innovation.

Volvo XC90

I love this car. A Scandinavian interpretation of an XXL-SUV that is interestingly regarded with sympathy out in the street – what makes a difference to some of its big size competitors. Kudos earns Volvo’s courage to limit the XC90 to four cylinder engines and recommend a plug-in to those customers who look for performance. Criticism draws the not user-optimised touchscreen.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Do I have to underline it is a very good car? It definitely is. The absence of noise to a large extent and the absolute ease of moving are fascinating and help you eating kilometers. But I have to get used to the cockpit with all its scattered knobs and switches. And why do I have to pay extra money for a feature like the new virtual cockpit that is largely defining this new generation?

BMW 7 Series

It is unbelievable: How can a car big like this be handled so easily? I did not want to drive it on the handling course because I thought it might be the wrong location for this car. But it wasn`t. It was pure fun. And the comfort was not compromised at all. Wonderful. Okay, it is an expensive car, but this one exceeds my expectations by far.

Jaguar XE

Tales of love and hate: Exterior design is brilliant, interior is not what I expect in 2016. Driving is fun but where is the comfort? And why is the diesel so noisy? Its definitely a car for younger buyers, a driver`s car. No wonder it is so successful in Italy. Its so emotional it could be an Alfa Romeo. By the way…

Mazda MX-5

Still crazy after all these years. The MX-5 is a classic. Jump into it and you are driving a time machine, including the feeling of being 25 years younger. It turns when you think about turning. Big fun. It is definitely worth being on the shortlist. It could even be on a long list of cars of the Century. But it is not my Car of the Year.

Opel Astra

Opel has made such a progress with the Astra, compared to its predecessor. It handles well and has good comfort, it is roomy despite its compactness and it finally has modern engines. For Opel, it shows the way to go. But I doubt that the Astra is what the Volkswagen Golf was for 2013 or the Peugeot 308 was for 2014. And modern extras are expensive.

Skoda Superb

Value for money, that is what Skoda stands for. And the new design language is fantastic, even the Superb sedan looks great. But compared to the Audi A4 for example, there is a big difference. The Superb is not that refined into all details, its comfort has some weak points, its prone to crosswinds. We had the VW Passat win last year and I feel the Skoda is not that big progress compared.

Volvo XC90

Although I am not a real fan of SUVs, I liked this one from the very beginning. Excellent design. Most convincing cockpit concept I have seen in many years, reduced like an Apple product or a high end stereo. It is more a living room than the interior of a car. If the future is about autonomous driving this is pretty much my imagination of an interior in 2025. Brilliant sound system. Four-cylinder-strategy is right, although it would not apply for every brand.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

“It´s a classy car, rich in features, compelling in ability, strong inappeal. The interior is beautiful, the chassis is competent, the handlingis failsafe. But for some strange reasons, the A4 fails to create thatvital spark of fascination and emotion. Dynamically almost faultless, itis a cold – rather than cool – and disappointingly uninvolving piece ofkit.”

BMW 7 Series

“Smooth ride, creamy handling, tenacious grip, adequate performance. Andjust about every extra specialist suppliers can offer. So why doesn´t the7series come out tops? Because of the conservative design, the overkillergonomics and the high price compared to the likely low resale value.Perhaps another case of less is more”

Jaguar XE

“It could have won – if it had not been for the bland interior, thebelow-par choice of materials and that unrefined diesel. The Jag still isthe saloon of choice for fast cross-country stages and even fasterautobahn runs. It fuses a great chassis with strong brakes and aresponsive steering. At the end of the day, however, the flaws take theirtoll.”

Mazda MX-5

No comments submitted

Opel Astra

“Not the most exciting driver´s car, but a competent all-rounder, and goodvalue for money. It democratizes safety and convenience features whichused to be owned by premium car makers, its three-cylinder engine is areal discovery, and the Astra rarely puts a foot wrong on the road. Coulddo with a wider drivetrain selection though, including hybrid and e-power.”

Skoda Superb

“Those who criticize the Skoda for being nothing but a reskinned Passatshould remember that the VW was last year´s COTY. The Superb has even more rear legroom, a bigger boot, and it is cheaper to buy. But despite the fresh design it makes for a rather boring drive, lacking a strong diesel and a spicy RS version. Close, yet not close enough.”

Volvo XC90

The winner of the heart. Its cabin radiates a very special sense of the occasion, the quality is up there with the very best, handling and roadholding leave little to be desired. But the harsh ride disappoints, the plug-in hybrid variant is poorly balanced, and even the most powerful four-cylinder engine can win the struggle with this much mass and weight.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The Audi A4 continues to be what he has been for a long time: a benchmark in technical standard and finish with clear and attractive design. In the latest generation it offers a lot of different modern and well driveable engines and the well-known quattro-drive for active safety on the road – a car for living with very well, despite the prices are quite high. What I miss is a real step forward in design and more emotion on the road.

BMW 7 Series

The premature praises were high: the new top-model of BMW should be a massive step forward concerning the digital future of cars. After driving all those assistances in practice, the disappointment is great. Neither do we find the real break-through, nor is the operation as simple as it should be. Of course it drives superb as every BMW does, but the design – exterior and interior – is surprisingly oldfashioned. And the price is very high.

Jaguar XE

Jaguar is doing a great job at the moment, no doubt. And that the new XE is amongst the Coty finalists is only one result of this development. What I like most is, that the XE drives superb. You feel the lightweight, thanks to a lot of aluminum, really on the road. The XE feels compact an direct – more as a sportscar than as a limousine. What I miss is an attractive diesel-engine and a better finish of navigation and other assistants.

Mazda MX-5

A car which is a legend in the meanwhile. The first generation was similar to the Lotus Elan, now design has changed and looks more as the rest of the Mazda model-Family – nice and consequent. But first of all the MX-5 makes a lot of fun to drive on curvy roads, above all with the 160 HP engine. It`s a car for sunny days but not for the rest of the year. For that and for the practical side of life you better look for another car – maybe an Opel Astra …

Opel Astra

Congratulations Opel, the Astra is a car without mistakes – affordable, attractive to look at and to sit in, with modern, efficient powertrains, especially the new 3 cylinder. The Astra illustrates perfectly the self-estimation of the brand: approachability. So moreover you get modern connectivity and exactly the assistants, which make driving more comfortable and safe.

Skoda Superb

The Superb has everything, a coty-winner has. It is comfortable and very roomy, with perfect finish and practical details inside and elaborated technique coming out of the volkswagen-stock. Besides that, it is attractively priced, looks good an drives nice. The only thing which gives him a disadvantage is his relationship to the VW Passat, which was the Coty-winner last year.

Volvo XC90

Thomas Ingenlath, no doubt, is pure luck for Volvo. The XC90 was his first model as chief designer for the swedish brand and we are looking forward to the future models. The big SUV XC90 doesn`t seem to be really big – and that`s a compliment. Even more attractive is the interior. Besides that, it is very roomy and has a lot of saftey-assistants. What I mainly miss is a smooth six-cylinder engine and a more comfortable suspension.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Even the design has made a minor change, Audi created a complete new A4. What impressed me most is the high level of quality, especially in the interior. Driving comfort is smooth and quiet. It feels almost being in a “little” A8. The newly designed two-litre TFSI marks a record in efficiency and should be nice alternative to the diesel pendants.

BMW 7 Series

Can you put more innovations in one car? No. But it’s hard to believe that the customers are really buying all these features. In fact, what they got as standard is perfect driving comfort, latest technology in terms of engines and of connectivity. Unfortunately the 7-series is only affordable for a tiny little part of customers.

Jaguar XE

How brave of Jaguar to join the middle class again. Now the engineers did a better job than last time, choosing an aluminium body and combined it with the suspension of the F-Type. Handling of the XE is brilliant. Unfortunately comfort suffers. Interior quality cannot keep up with the Audi A4. As newly designed the diesel engine is a bit too noisy.

Mazda MX-5

In the segment of small roadsters the Mazda MX-5 is benchmark. It is amazing how the brand has kept the DNA for almost 27 years. The handling of the MX-5 is unique. It would be ideal as a second car, just having fun and enjoy the sun. But for daily use the Mazda demands too many compromises in terms of space, luggage and easy in and out.

Opel Astra

Respect. Opel has listened to customers and has wiped out a lot of failures they have done in the predecessor. Now the Astra feels more agile. And advanced technology Opel offers with OnStar connectivity. Younger people will love it and probably won’t see some lack in the interior quality and the very small characters on the instruments.

Skoda Superb

The brand stands for best value for money. Here the Superb makes no exception, offers a lot of space, best trunk capacity and the biggest legroom on the back seats in segment. Driving comfort and handling are good, all the engines are efficient. But in focussing mainly on functionality Skoda forgot giving the Superb a bit of sex appeal.

Volvo XC90

Take any badge off this SUV stays as a Volvo. The XC90 is a car with character. It offers huge space, the highest level of safety among all SUVs. I admire the strategy of the Swedish carmaker for saying “Good-by” to big engines and go along with four-cylinder only. What is a bit irritating for the driver is aiming the too small icons on the display

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The new A4 is a true “starship”, when it comes to the 1.4-litre gasoline version. Pumping 150 horsepower, one does not even need to test drive the more powerful versions to make sure that its makers are right to claim that their product lifts the whole segment one step higher.

BMW 7 Series

The flagship of the manufacturer that stands as the one who still respects the enthusiastic driver. Its “forbidden” price makes it impossible for me to award it with more vote points, but I feel no less than respect for its outstanding high-tech features, which predispose us for what we shall experience in the forthcoming BMW models.

Jaguar XE

What a pleasant surprise. The XE reminded me of the glorious era of the British brand. Every XE of the range is fun-to-drive even if one may complain about the design and the trim of the dashboard. As a conclusion, the XE managed to enter into a very demanding segment.

Mazda MX-5

Our beloved Miata turns up-to-date. The new version has a lot in common with the original that was launched almost 25 years ago and that is exactly why we have great expectations. In any case, the new MX-5 still is a true mood changer: it makes you feel good, even if you woke up in a grumpy mood.

Opel Astra

It has it all. Compared to its predecessor, it is a brand new model since it has been upgraded in almost every aspect. The entry level which consists of the 1.0-litre gasoline version fulfills the expectations, the 1.6 diesel is one of the best in class, while the 200 hp 1.6-litre gasoline version among other characteristics fully demonstrates the chassis` capabilities.

Skoda Superb

Being a good car is not enough in order to be an important car also. Distinguished by its spaciousness in any version, I like it both as saloon and maybe even more as combi. Accepting the fact that this is not a rebadged VW Passat, I would only had to mention that it felt inferior in terms of ride quality, when driven on French provincial roads.

Volvo XC90

Is this the comeback of the Swedish automotive industry? Don`t forget that the first good signs were given with the V40. The new XC90 not only confirms that they are heading towards the right direction, it also demostrates their way of thinking. It is a pleasant surprise for any automotive enthusiast out there, and it will definitely put up a good fight with the German opposition.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Refined, softly sprung, quiet, well thought-out, spacious for its size and executed to an incredible level of quality – these are the first thoughts that spring to the mind when evaluating the A4. But it offers a blunted drive and from the outside it’s just too easy to mix up with its forebears – or in fact, with all contemporary Audi sedans.

BMW 7 Series

Never has the 7-Series soared so high, but it still isn’t up there to beat the best. Overwhelming array of cosseting extras, superior quality, lots of weight-saving carbon in the body and sensational engines. But the ride isn’t as refined as could be (all versions come with air suspension), the short-wheelbase models have limited legroom in the rear, too.

Jaguar XE

Devastating good looks, a body composed mostly of aluminium, class-leading driveability, seats as comfy as an armchair and punchy engines – a winning combination. Or is it? The diesel engine is rough and rattly, space is awfully limited in the rear, the interior is bland and has quite a number of quality problems. Despite all that aluminium the car isn’t a featherweight champ either.

Mazda MX-5

No need for long compliments here: the MX-5 is the car to remember from 2016. Why, it could even turn out to be the car of the decade, it is just so perfect in everything it does. Car art brought to a level that has never existed before. Car art that will prove awfully difficult to exceed in the future. And for what the MX-5 does, it’s incredibly cheap, too.

Opel Astra

After a long pause Opel is back with refined and strong engines, lightweight bodies, user-friendly infotainment and high-level extras sold at grocery store prices. The Astra K is a melting pot for all the new goodies: a spacious interior, a good drive, a blinding array of intelligent electronics. But its design is cluttered and many of its novelties are mandatory today.

Skoda Superb

The clean new design is full of character whilst the model has suceeded in keeping all of its famed specialities. Unmatched roominess, a cavernous boot, lots of well thought out details, like the set of nets in the rear, the umbrella in the door, the litter bag… But roadholding is forgettable, interior design is like a supermini’s, the seats aren’t too comfy either.

Volvo XC90

No SUV today matches the grandiosity of the XC90. The interior is a church of good taste, the details have come from a jewelry store. There are only four-cylinder engines, so the creamy sound of fives, sixes and V8’s is gone. Suspension is fidgety here, wallowy there, too many classic controls have been transferred into the complex infotainment system, too.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The new Audi A4 is a well-engineered all-rounder, attracting attention not with its humble looks but with its inner features. It offers plenty of space for its passengers and their luggage, its broad range of engines are strong and fuel efficient, and from its option list you can buy all modern comfort and safety technologies.

BMW 7 Series

Regarding technology, few other new models feature more advanced solutions today than the brand new BMW 7-series. Its body is made of a material mix, which makes its weight comparable to cars one size smaller, which means less consumption, faster acceleration and easier driving. And it can park itself; it has an intelligent key, etc, etc…

Jaguar XE

The technologically advanced aluminum body, an altogether unique proposition in the segment, together with the two liter diesel engine makes the XE an exceptionally frugal car. On the other hand, the petrol engine models are great driver’s cars with good handling, accurate steering and excellent ride. All it needs is more space and better quality to become the perfect car.

Mazda MX-5

Driving the new MX-5 is an absolutely unique experience because of its agile handling, good gear change, light and accurate steering, high revving engines and the fantastically good interaction between car and driver. For the MX-5 all of these seem to be the result of the same Japanese handicraft which once created the magnificent samurai swords.

Opel Astra

Compared to its predecessor, no other Astra generation improved so much as this new one. It is much lighter which, in cooperation with the brand new engines, results in higher fuel efficiency. It is also better to drive, and this new generation model is full of up-to-date and useful technologies like smart LED lights, safety assistance functions, and OnStar service.

Skoda Superb

If you are looking for a good looking, well made, very spacious car with a premium feel, efficient and powerful engines, lots of safety technologies and a comfortable ride, which above all represents great value for money too, the new Škoda Superb is just the right car for you. But if you want a car with sporty dynamics you have to look somewhere else.

Volvo XC90

Volvo developed the brand new XC90 from scratch. The car has proven to be an outstanding big SUV due to its great styling, spacious, luxurious, quiet and versatile passenger compartment, big boot, good body control, lots of advanced safety tech, four cylinder engines that are both powerful and efficient, and last but not least the plug-in hybrid version.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Another feat of engineering by the four-ringed brand, although conservatively packaged. While the Quattro versions are great to drive, the regular fare is still refined, fun and economical. The A4’s interior remains the benchmark in its class.

BMW 7 Series

It’s a div for new technology, as stylish and whizz-bang as you would expect in a premium flagship. Strip away the tech frills and you get a great driver’s car as well. However a key criteria of the tech is meaningful innovation and I’m not sure all the features on offer meet the mark. Gesture controls are certainly a welcome new technology in the automotive world, but the system fitted here still seems a relatively beta version of what’s hopefully to become a common feature in cars.

Jaguar XE

It’s great to see the Big Cat return to this all-important market segment, and with a car that looks as sharp as any of its rivals. The XE’s handling is worth a mention as well and it’s clearly trying to take on the BMW 3-Series in terms of its engaging drive. The cabin is a weak point, however and the diesel engine is not as refined as rivals.

Mazda MX-5

Fun, pure and simple. It’s the world’s best-selling sports car and rightly so. Others have tried to imitate its mix of driving fun and affordability: none have succeeded. A veritable motoring luddite compared to the rest of the tech-laden finalists yet it showcases the very essence of why we still love to drive. Amid plans of autonomus driving, it’s worth reminding ourselves what we lose out on when we hand over control to the computers. Impractical, relatively noisy and not the most eco-friendly choice. Yet it’s pure driving pleasure and it puts a smile on my face every time. That’s why it’s my car of the year 2016.

Opel Astra

It epitomises the latest advances in everything from safety and weight-saving to fuel efficiency. It’s all encompassed in a package that handles well and is affordable for many families. From interior space improvements to the use of lightweight metals, every element of the Astra has been improved, updated and advanced. The new engine line-up features some real stars like the 1-litre petrol, while notable features like the OnStar system should definitely lure buyers back to the brand.

Skoda Superb

From the family buyer to the corporate fleet the new Superb delivers. Previously the lure was the incredible spaciousness at a competitive price. Skoda has added stylish design and a real touch of premium class to that mix. The ride quality is really impressive and the car beats all rivals in terms of space and comfort. It’s a great all-round package with the latest safety and infotainment features courtesy of the R&D clout of its parent, VW Group. All things considered it’s at the top of its class.

Volvo XC90

A bold statement of intent from the Swedish brand and further proof it intends to live up to its bold promise that no one will be killed or seriously injured in a Volvo after 2020. An array of safety features is mixed with a brave new cabin design and an impressive mix of powertrains. The big talking point – the tablet-style touchscreen – has some ergonomic flaws but it’s on the right track. No question of its premium pedigree, but similarly its scale makes it a little unwieldy for some European roads. Styling is relatively divisive, particularly amongst previous owners. But for me it works.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Audi did an excellent job in keep on improving an already great car. Ride, handling, roadholding are excellent: however, the model is so true to itself that is an evolution, but not a revolution for the brand. Also the interiors are quite predictable: everything looks perfect but it`s hard to perceive the novelty.

BMW 7 Series

Elegant and well proportioned, it has not evolved much in terms of design and the exterior looks even too understated for a luxury sedan – and such an expensive one. Sitting inside is a great experience, both for the excellent driving performances and for the outstanding technology features. But the low roof line is not ideal for tall rear-seat passengers.

Jaguar XE

In terms of improvement of product quality, Jaguar has come a long way compared to just a few years ago. And design-wise the XE is an elegant, modern and well proportioned sedan. However, some further fine tuning still needs to be done in order to meet the standards of contemporary premium products.

Mazda MX-5

Generation after generation, the freshness of the original Miata/MX5 had been diluted. This latest one is better than some of its predecessors and it`s a fun-to-drive car at an affordable price, but still does not add much to the appeal and passion that the 1989 model was capable to raise.

Opel Astra

A well developed project for a brand new, more efficient and lightweight product that makes innovative features available for a wider audience. It’s smaller outside but roomier inside, going against the trend that wants a dimensional increase at every new generation. Handling is good, but the steering feels occasionally a bit light at higher speeds.

Skoda Superb

An excellent value-for-money product, with – literally – superb stamping and assembly of the body panels composing a modern, contemporary design. Maybe a little too much VW-style, which means an accurate work for the surface treatment, but also a kind of coldness and deja-vu effect, especially for the interior.

Volvo XC90

With this car Volvo is entering a new era, proving itself capable to represent an appropriate alternative to German premiums. Great handling makes feel the car smaller than its actual size, while the roomy interior offers a contemporary and accurate design. The work done on the man-machine interface is outstanding, with a perfect integration of the central screen, similar to a tablet.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The Audi’s bestseller raises to the challenge without big revolutions, but with a perceptible growth of contents in every respect. One of the main goals of the new A4 is also to help erase the last months of 2015 that have involved (although marginally) the brand in the troubled case of the Dieselgate.

BMW 7 Series

It’s impossible not to appreciate the luxury package and technologies (including the hybrid version) of the top BMW sedane. It is, however, more an evolution than a real revolution. It’s a chauffeured limousine, best appreciated in the back seat.

Jaguar XE

It can hold its own against the luxury German sedans, and it`s especially enjoyable for its comfortable interior and the driving pleasure it provides. The elegant style lives up to the best Jaguar tradition, even though it does not quite reach the peaks of sophistication of the larger XF model.

Mazda MX-5

Historical leader among the world compact spyders, it’s based on a new modular platform and would deserve an award for what has been done so far. Always an interesting car, even though clearly for a small niche of customers only.

Opel Astra

It’s an important evolution, a real poster car for the new Opel era. Fresh styling, comfortable interior, driving fun and, more importantly, a lot of available technologies rarely found in this segment (like OnStar, Opel Eye and Intellilux Matrix): more than enough reasons, in my opinion, to name it car of the year. Also, the addition of the Sports Tourer version means the range is very well-rounded and smartly tailored.

Skoda Superb

It uses and intelligently optimizes many platforms and components of the Volkswagen Group. Appreciable roominess, big luggage`s space. The Skoda brand is on the growth also thanks to cars like the new Superb but, regarding the design and the quality of the interior, it could aim for a little improvement.

Volvo XC90

It’s large size makes it more suitable to the US and China markets for which it was conceived, penalizing it a bit in the small urban spaces of most European cities. Yet, this new Volvo flagship model is quite exciting for its design, the layout of the interior, and the quality of the advanced technologies (including hybrid solution) and driver assistance it offers. All the most advanced safety systems are standard equipment.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Iron hand in a velvet glove. The new Audi 4 strikes for its extraordinary flexibility as it conforms to each and every situation always standing at a level of excellence. With the 2.0 TDI 190 cv engine you can enjoy both a consumption of 20 km/litre in the motorway in utmost comfort and you can as well experience the thrills of driving on a track and get excited by the speed, responsiveness and safety it shows in turns thus making the most daring manoeuvres look easy. For those who love driving in all its aspects, it is difficult, if not impossible, to find a better car in this category.

BMW 7 Series

Not enough test drive, no vote.

Jaguar XE

From the dynamic point of view and also as far as the driving pleasure is concerned the Jaguar XE with its rear wheel drive can match up to the Audi A4, but when it comes to the inner space (unacceptable at the rear seats), internal finish and dashboard look, its level immediately decreases. Shame.

Mazda MX-5

Not enough test drive, no vote.

Opel Astra

Opel has no doubt made a good job with Astra. We know very well that reducing exterior dimensions and at the same time increase inner space it’s not exactly a kids game. Now even the back seats are comfortable, but the luggage compartment has a just acceptable capacity. Weight reduction has truly remarkable positive effects on handling and also on fuel consumption. As far as noise is concerned maybe a few more insulating panels would have been appreciated. The offer of cutting edge devices is interesting but they are all optional.

Skoda Superb

The Skoda Superb is the dream of all wives when it comes to holidays. Great cruise comfort, plenty of space and an apparently unlimited load capacity. And what’s more it now has an attractive design. It also offers all the high quality standards of the VW Group

Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 almost embarrasses for the luxury of its top models. Its electronic safety equipment is the most advanced and refined you can ask for but it remains reserved to an elite that can afford to spend a lot. In addition the diesel engine, 4 cylinders only, is barely adequate to the category of this car in terms of both smooth power supply and driving feeling.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The A4 shows a superb interpretation of a classic concept, with quality levels normally found on higher range models. Exactly what you expect by Audi, in one sentence.

BMW 7 Series

The BMW 7 Series is a kind of concentrate of hi-tech solutions and at the same time offers an extraordinary driving experience for a car so large as it is. But by now the big sedans appear far away to be an object of desire for the European customers.

Jaguar XE

The XE is another attempt to introduce the British brand traditional contents in a lower segment: it does not lack of interest, but still it is to be refined in some elements.

Mazda MX-5

The tiny Mazda roadster comes after a 25-year unique, never-ending career, during which it remained strictly loyal to its original formula: driving fun, first of all. Moreover its technical credo, lightweight is more important than power, is going to be an imperative in the future of the whole automotive industry.

Opel Astra

The styling is quite conventional, nonetheless the new generation of Opel Astra is actually and significantly lighter than its predecessor. Again, it introduces uncommon solutions in the mass market, first of all the stunning matrix lights: a real plus in terms of safety, more than a spectacular night show. In the new Astra family you may also find a wide choice of engines and, eventually, Onstar services, another important issue in terms of safety and assistance.

Skoda Superb

It is no news to find in a new Volvo state-of-the-art safety equipment. But the virtues of the XC 90 go far beyond: the car shows first class driving assistance devices and a quality of unexpected level. Moreover, its scalable architecture is a promise for the future range of the Swedish carmaker: the XC 90 is not a large volume car but it appears to be a cornerstone in Volvo history.

Volvo XC90

Clearly, the best model in the history of the Swedish make to date. One of the most comfortable cars, not only in the big SUVs segment. Scandinavian design at its best – minimalist, but standing out against the competitors. Sadly, not all the details in this premium class car, though look nice, are from top quality materials.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Simply the perfect car. Choice of engines to suit all tastes, a solid chassis, new infotainment, a large amount of electronic driving aids. But the price is its weak point: the A4 is still on of the most expensive in his category and it is often necessary to add as much money at entry level price for a well equipped car.

BMW 7 Series

BMW 7 series is the most technological car of the pack; Its sets new standards in many aspects. It opens a new era for the infotainment with the gesture control and the active key. And its 4WS system allows you to drive a car 5.10 meters long easily as a subcompact. But it’s simply too esclusive: a luxury car for a few. That why I give only 2 points.

Jaguar XE

A remarkable effort of Jaguar entering a segment where it was never present. The XE is the most original car of the pack because is the only one that never had a previous model in the segment. But its contents (engine, handling, drivability, infotainment) are not so impressive.

Mazda MX-5

The Mx-5 is a iconic car. The only car of the pack that can give you a real driving pleasure. This small roadster is very fun to drive and transmits feeling that no other car can give you. But other than that, I cannot gives more than 2 points to the Mazda Mx-5 because it’s not a car for everyone.

Opel Astra

The Astra is a dramatic enhancement of the previous model. Good engines, excellent chassis, a very good handling makes this car the best choise for a popular car. The only flaw in my opinion the diesel engine is a little bit noisy. The highlight is the infotainment system: it gives to the buyers of a popular car the same features of luxury cars.

Skoda Superb

The Superb is the essence of the positive values of Skoda: excellent roominess is its best highlight, both the sedan version and the wagon. The Superb has an excellent handling whereas it is 4.80 meters long. Its quality/price ratio is remarkable. But still shows an anonymous design that hides a lot of his qualities.

Volvo XC90

This giant Sport Utility sets really a new standard for Volvo. New style and modern engines; new chassis and suspension layout give to the XC90 a surprising agility for a almost 5 meters-long car. The infotainment is the most original ever seen on a car: a really friendly interface. But for its size and for the price XC90 is not the car for the rest of us.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Elegant and technological, the new generation of one of the top global models by Audi is the perfect icon for the brand, confirming the high quality level the automotive manufacturer from Ingolstadt has attained. It adopts the new platform, guaranteeing excellent dynamic behavior, with innovative electronic systems sustaining the driver.

BMW 7 Series

The flagship model from BMW always makes an important mark on the history of the passenger car, introducing technological innovation that has never been seen before on the market. Great care is taken with the finishing, and only top quality materials are used. The comfort has few rivals, yet it remains agile regardless of its size. The care dedicated to efficiency is also confirmed by the Hybrid Plug-in version.

Jaguar XE

This is Jaguar’s latest attempt to challenge its top German rivals in the compact sedan market. An extensive use of aluminum is key to the fuel efficiency and performance of the extensive innovative range of engines, both gasoline and diesel, at the top for their fluidity and fuel efficiency. The noise levels could be improved.

Mazda MX-5

This model is the perfect interpretation of the compact roadster, from the driving pleasure to the accessible cost. Mazda’s SkyActiv technology further improves fuel efficiency without offering revolutionary solutions. It is an excellent sports car with worldwide success but it remains a niche model with limited circulation.

Opel Astra

For me, this is the Car of the Year for 2016. It fits in the largest European market segment, and has all its ducks lined up to perform. Its design is austere, yet pleasant, with excellent general balance, and engines that extol the downsizing philosophy. Its road handling and technological equipment are good, with the active headlights shining from among the others.

Skoda Superb

The new flagship model by Skoda is another notch in the belt of growth that the brand has enjoyed over the last few years as it has moved upward in the market. The platform and mechanics offer the guarantee of one of the largest European automotive groups. Both the sedan and the wagon stand out for their living space, which is at the top of not just this category.

Volvo XC90

It is quite surprising what Volvo has been able to create with its first model of the new era. The design, both interior and exterior, is sedate but very attractive. The engines are completely new, powerful, and quiet, and the hybrid plug-in version is there too. The safety levels are on the cutting-edge, as per the brand’s tradition.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Great evolution, and not suprisingly, better than its predecessor. Well balanced handling with the right emphasis on comfort.

BMW 7 Series

Flagship of the brand, moves the functionality forward with big en and small features. Remote parking, gesture control and tabletcontrol. Also in terms of construction the next step in using a mix of materials such as carbonfibre. Limo with all the comfort and gadgets you expect from a topclass-car like this. Very comfortable and with great agility thanks to clever chassis and drivetrains that give it almost the handling of an sportscar.

Jaguar XE

Drivers car that really means business. Good looking en well-built car. Great handling, fine engines and great performance. Matches business and pleasure very well. Small disapointment cramped rearspace for longer passengers and some cockpitmaterials are not at competionlevel.

Mazda MX-5

An icon reborn. Well-built affordable roodster. Great handling, very entertaining. Avaible in two levels: starting and expert-divers. More mature but not too perfect. Interior and seatingposition not ideal.Good example of evolution respecting the core values. Monument for fun-cars!

Opel Astra

Best in class. Good car that performs very well in every aspect. Scores maximum points in value-for-money.Comfortable and well handing, room interior. Lots of equipment and some advanced features as LED-matrix lights and Opel-On-Star for affordable price.

Skoda Superb

Superb car, especially in terms of interiorspace and practical features. Better styling than before. Better then some of the more premium brands.

Volvo XC90

Big next step for Volvo. Next-Generation styling is fresh and clean-lined. Good engines and well performing plug-in driveline. Lots of functionality and a real luxury SUV mean you still pay the price in terms of euros en kilograms.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The A4 is lighter and more slippery than its predecessor and as well stacked with innovations as the other competitors. It is a car that will appeal to rational car buyers, but if you are looking for driving pleasure it disappoints and lags far behind the Jaguar XE, even in its most sporty settings.

BMW 7 Series

Lots of innovations in the BMW 7 Series too, some of them more art for art’s sake than really practical. A big car that drives well, but it fails to appeal to me. Sedans of this bulk and size will rapidly become less and less relevant in the future.

Jaguar XE

Not only a very good Jaguar, but also an excellent car in its segment. Fine petrol engines and a really good diesel. Better looking and far nicer to drive than the competition, even the diesel is truly sporty. It is not without faults: space in the rear is limited and diesel is noisy when starting. This is the car I would taken home from this seven.

Mazda MX-5

I love the way Mazda treats the MX-5, gradually taking it to higher levels, without losing but even strengthening, its main quality: old style driving pleasure. As far as sportiness is concerned it is not as well balanced as the Jaguar, but more playful instead.

Opel Astra

Opel has made big steps with the Astra, it has become a fine automobile, loaded with relevant innovations and not only that, it drives really well and easily beats the candidates from Audi and Skoda as far as driving pleasure is concerned.

Skoda Superb

The Superb is one of the best looking Skoda’s I have ever seen and good value for money. It is a follower, not a car that sets an example. An attractive car for rational buyers, it will not disappoint if driving pleasure has a low priority.

Volvo XC90

The XC90 has an excellent chassis and a really clever architecture. It drives surprisingly well, all the drive lines are good to excellent. It surely deserves points in this competition because of its technical merits. It is much lighter than its predecessor, but being a SUV it still is an unnecessary big and heavy vehicle, and in my opinion can never be a Car of the Year.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Lighter and roomier than its predecessor, Audi made another step forward with its latest A4. The fact that its much lighter gives the car a more lively character. It responses quick and precise to movements of the steering wheel and all engines feel very alive. It’s up there with its German rivals and the Jaguar XE. But will the customer appreciate the fact that on the outside its really very hard to determine that this is the all new Audi A4?

BMW 7 Series

The new BMW 7-series is a gateway into the future. It’s also a showcase of what BMW is capable of in terms of technology. Interesting, because most of these techniques will eventually find their way to the more affordable BMW-models. For instance: Impressive is the fact that the automatic gearbox takes the sat nav route into account when shifting (for maximum fuel efficiency), that the car is able of parking itself into a garage without the driver being in the car, and that you no longer need to actually touch the touchscreen in order to operate it. A simple swipe in the air is enough. The 7-series shows that the autonomous driving car is not far away anymore.

Jaguar XE

A true Jaguar and a worthy opponent to cars such as the BMW 3-series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-class. Elegant and sporty at the same time, this little Jag is a great drivers car. Road holding and steering are very nice and give the BMW 3-series a run for its money. Although not as refined as its German rivals, the cabin is neatly done with the usage of nice materials and a beautiful design. People who love cars will not be disappointed with the Jaguar XE.

Mazda MX-5

One should almost forget that driving a car can and still may be a lot of fun. Luckily we can always count on Mazda which yet again developed a new MX-5. A great little roadster that makes you enjoy driving again, especially when the top is down. Though equipped with the modern driver aids, the MX-5 still gives you more than enough freedom to ‘play’ with the car. The MX-5 is agile: steer and throttle response are quick and precise. Its strongest point is its (Dutch) price: for around 30.000 euro’s its very affordable. Mazda understands that having fun doesn’t have to come with a high price. Well done!

Opel Astra

Opel produces a seriously good car: the new Astra. Its equipped with the latest technology such as in-car-wifi, onstar and has lots of (standard!) safety features. On top of that there is a range of good and powerful turbo engines. The new Astra not only looks the business, It drives very good too. Last but not least: there is much more interior space then in its predecessor, especially in the back. Compared to the old Astra and compared to its rivals, this is simply a very, very good car.

Skoda Superb

The Skoda Superb is a very sensible car. It’s very big for a car in its class – especially the stationwagon – and it’s well put together. Though somewhat dull on the inside, it more than delivers when it comes to practicality and performance. However, so did its predecessor, which also still is a great car for everyday use, especially when you want to move your family.

Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 is a magnificent car and the benchmark in its class. It’s the ideal family car with a very comfortable ride, lots of interior space and loaded with many safety features, some of which are unique. It is standard equipped with seven seats – which should actually be standard for any car in this premium SUV-class. Ergonomics are in a league of its own, mainly thanks to a very smart tablet-like large touchscreen. Volvo understands that there actually is a substitute for cubic inches: all engines simply have four cylinders and they all deliver in terms of performance and fuel economy. On top of that the XC90 is also available as a plugin hybrid. Although not as fuel efficient as Volvo claims, it still helps in terms of a lower carbon dioxide.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The new A4 is certainly not an extremne makeover – not designwise anyway. But the car is lighter, the handling and comfort even better than before and the engine-program – including a plug-in-hybrid – offeres something for everybody. The Avant Quattro is a favourit in Norway.

BMW 7 Series

Elegant and extremely luxurious. A car that offers a very high grade of comfort on highways and at the same time is agile and sporty if you choose the four wheel steering. The new plug-in-hybrid will be the green alibi.

Jaguar XE

Your neighbor will probably buy an Audi og BMW, so this new contender in the compact premium segment will draw some attention. There is a still an aura of british luxury to the Jaguar name. Practical and a bit sporty, but the comfort is not at the Audi-level.

Mazda MX-5

This car offers you a lot of fun for a reasonable price. Built as a traditonal two-seater open sportscar with rearwheel drive, light weigt and super-respons, it will make you smile all the way.

Opel Astra

Good looking, more compact exterior, but more spaceious inside, with new engines and equipment never before seen in this class. And its lighter, wich is good both for the consumption, emission and handeling. Opels frase ”a new standard in the compact segment” is not far from the truth.

Skoda Superb

Super-practical, good looking, with a reasonable price – at least with the lower end engines – the Superb is really somthing a family with children would like to own. Why not a plug-in-hybrid version? A ”no-go” from mother-VW?

Volvo XC90

Everything is new with the XC90. The design is one thing. More important is the level of safety equipment, the plug-in-hybrid possibility, the space with seven seats and the comfort behind the wheel. A safer and better place to gtransport yourself and your family is hard to find. The downside is the price, which is not so nice in Norway.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Surprising set of cars – half of it from premium class. Generally the best cars are BMW and Volvo followed by Jaguar and Audi. However, in Car of the Year, we must take into consideration the economy factor. That is way, in my opinion, Opel Astra deserves for biggest amount of points – new construction build from the base following latest trends, convincing driving, extensive equipment and good design. Just behind Opel, there is a cavalcade of premium cars: Volvo, which is a great representative of his country – Swedish design, the highest level of safety. Next – BMW 7 Series – perhaps the best classic car in the world – no doubt a pretty good gift for the 100th anniversary of BMW. Next places for the big Skoda Superb and for the smallest of the Jaguar family (small but with great heart), which proudly represents British brand. Audi A4 is characterized by very high technical level. Mazda MX-5 is a car you can fall in love with, but for me personally a little bit too small, so – in my “seventh” – I placed Mazda CX-3.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The biggest advantage of this next generation Audi A4 is its body structure, the biggest disadvantage – that you cannot see it… The aerodynamically perfected light body begs for a look that would set it apart from its previous incarnation. The A4’s strengths are also systems for assisting the driver and ensuring the travellers’ safety.

BMW 7 Series

Is this a perfect car? Many of its aspects truly are. However, in terms of price, one BMW 7 Series will set you back as much as six Opel Astras. Do the creators of that apparently inconspicuous compact not deserve more praise? Are there any things in the BMW worth six times as much as those in the Astra?

Jaguar XE

The long awaited and successful return of the make with a middle-class car. If only it were not deceptively similar to the bigger XF… Against its sophisticated competitors in the premium segment, the XE stands out for its very light and stiff body, which contributes to its excellent road grip and enormous pleasure for the driver.

Mazda MX-5

It wins hands down as the Car of the Year for… tiny drivers. Even with the weaker engine, it proves that good performance is not only the domain of cars with engines with enormous powers. Besides, the MX-5 is a very pretty roadster. It is a pity, though, that it has so little room inside, despite the fact that it is a two-seater.

Opel Astra

The only ‘ordinary’ car among this year’s finalists – deserves the highest praise. Not only because it is the cheapest. It is simply a very good car and meets the criteria for the Car of the Year nearly perfectly – it has a technologically advanced, light structure, is powered by state-of-the-art engines, is comfortable, safe and pretty.

Skoda Superb

Third time lucky, as it were. The third generation of the model is, like before, uses Volkswagen’s well-known ‘building bricks’. It is stately and elegant, just like a premium class limousine should. Definitely, its interior space is once again premium. It is a pity that its price is becoming increasingly premium as well.

Audi A4

From the outside, it looks too close to the previous generation and other Audi models. From the inside, the A4 climbed another step in quality and finish. Wide range of engine options, most of them very efficient, the same can be said of gearboxes, manual, double clutch or automatic. Easily the best dynamics in any new Audi. If only the styling was a little more audacious… Maybe not a love at first sight, but the new A4 grows on you after some time spent with it.

BMW 7 Series

Luxurious and roomy cabin, full of new features and gadgets, as long as you specify them from the arm-long options list. Carbon fiber reinforced steel body, an important step towards weight reduction. Base petrol and Diesel engines are more than enough for brisk performance and good fuel economy. Driving dynamics too much dependent on optional items. The 7 Series lost some of its personality, it feels too close to the Mercedes-Benz S Class.

Jaguar XE

Ride and handling tuned for a nice balance between agility and comfort are unique in the segment. Aluminum structure good for increased stiffness but not so much for weight reduction. Cabin not on a pair with the best rivals from Germany, both in fit and finish as well as ergonomics. Diesel engines too noisy. Exterior styling fits the brand image very well even if it is dangerously close to its bigger “brother”, the Jaguar XF.

Mazda MX-5

Driving dynamics feel a little like a classic car’s in the sense that it asks a lot from the driver but doesn’t give back much in performance. Still, it is a nice car to drive. Noisy engines, stability control not smooth enough. Manual soft top easy to deal with and 1.5-litre engine better than it might seem, reading the specifications. All in all, it’s only a small evolution from past MX-5s. Almost alone in its market segment, by now.

Opel Astra

GM took weight reduction in a very clever way. No need for exotic materials, when you use the brain to re-engineer steel structure and downsize engines, wheels and much more. The end result is a five door hatchback with generous cabin room, great optional sports seats. Small petrol and Diesel engines frugal and with good performance and fuel economy. Styling could be a bit more adventurous, both outside and inside the cabin.

Skoda Superb

Based on the same platform, engines, transmission and others from the VW Passat, Skoda Superb adds incredible cabin room, its own styling language and better value for money. There are a lot of useful features inside, typical of Skoda, and suspension has been tuned for comfort, which is no bad thing. Easy to drive and live with but not so far away from the previous generation, at least in concept terms.

Volvo XC90

Full-sized SUVs got a new serious player with the new generation XC90. New platform proves to be versatile enough to create versions ranging from a front wheel drive Diesel to a seven seater performance plug-in hybrid. Centre console with big format touchscreen is a real innovation and easy to use. Great Swedish styling, comfortable ride and competent handling.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The first mass application of the new MLB-Evo platform could hardly result in a better car providing less weight and greater stiffness. The new A4 also offers more interior space, boasts the best overall build quality, fit & finish on the dashboard and has been upgraded with a very impressive host of driver assistance and connectivity systems. The very wide engine palette reduces consumptions and contributes to improve consumptions and the excellent chassis is always competent and comfortable. With a more distinctive exterior design this car would be close to perfection.

BMW 7 Series

The historical luxury class leader should be concerned as the new 7 Series greatly improves overall comfort and it clearly has become the more agile and precise automobile in this premium segment. The world famous engineering competence delivered better performing and more frugal engines as the new 6 cylinder – petrol and diesel – engines will most likely be as popular as possible in this rarefied market segment. Features like the new touch screen in the dashboard with extended functions and the world´s most advanced head-up display will gain customers for BMW.

Jaguar XE

Jaguar is showing sharp claws to fight the dominant German premium rivals in the Executive segment. New platform and new chassis/body almost entirely in aluminium, a new engine range and an inspired design blending tradition and modernity are strong selling points. Boot capacity is smaller than expected, the dashboard design fails to strike a pose, we miss a joystick to control de infotainment system and rear seats should be higher to allow the rear passengers the appreciated amphitheatre views. And despite the aluminium construction the XE is not lighter than its rivals.

Mazda MX-5

The same front engine, rear wheel drive affordable roadster idea from 26 years ago summarizes the new MX5. The well balanced chassis generates many smiles during spirited driving through corners and the cabin is a little more spacious than before. But the 2016 MX5 only updates the previous model´s attributes, at best. The 1.5 petrol engine lacks stamina, steering should be revised (better communication skills and reach adjustment are missing).

Opel Astra

The new Opel Astra gets rid of unnecessary weight and combines the best of both worlds in terms of package: smaller outsider and roomier inside. Pricing is attractive and the new 3 cylinder 1 litre petrol and the new1.6 diesel units deserve a firm thumbs up, the dashboard is much more intuitive and less complicated to use and segment first useful & affordable technologies/services (like the clever lighting system and the onstar system) are strong assets. Customers looking for adaptive damping, dual clutch gearbox and 4×4 will have to look somewhere else.

Skoda Superb

It is true the new Superb greatly increments the virtues of the previous model adding even more spaciousness, convenience and functionality all for quite an attractive price tag, below VW. Unfortunately this election is also about technical innovation and in this respect the new Superb doesn´t have much to show as the engine range, the platform and the infotainment system are a bit of a deja vu. Great for Skoda customers and a worthy shortlist contender also as exterior design shows a lot more inspiration.

Volvo XC90

Fresh Money in the company is doing wonders for Volvo products as the new XC90 shows while staying true to the brand´s values. The modern and seductive looks fit the high quality and spacious new cabin which builds on the modern consumer´s skills to master tablets as the vehicle´s infotainment centre. The new platform raises active and passive safety to a very high level and banning engines with more than 4 cylinders was a bold decision which will erase the gas guzzler image of large SUVs. Especially the Plug-in hybrid. Great ride comfort but too much body roll.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The A4 is Audi’s one of the best selling model in the very tough compact executive segment and well done. Yes, exterior looks the similar like and others from doll named Audi, has a premium feel interior with the brilliant virtual cockpit and Audi’s new touchscreen display, both of which makes the whole infotainment system very simple and intuitive to use. But new Audi A4 a little bit lost driving ambition if we compare with previous A4 and falls short of the Jaguar XE. My choice – V6 3.0 TDI quattro.

BMW 7 Series

When you sit in a BMW 7 Series you always compare him with the Mercedes S-Class, and every time he loses. He is not so luxury as MB is, but for driving ambitions BMW better than S-Class. New BMW 7 Series is functional, clean and outstanding build quality with some of the best on-board tech in the industry and it`s still car more for driver than for passenger if talking about short version. My choice -730d xDrive with laser headlights (Full LED light doesn`t work well, more info: https://youtu.be/332_EF8pJHk).

Jaguar XE

Jaguar is back! Not with XJ or XF versions – with Jaguar XE! Forget about interior (we have some better in class), go to the any twisty road and enjoy by power and brand new aluminium chassis settings. The XE is the first Jaguar to use the iQ platform, an all-new piece of modular architecture destined to underpin cars as diverse as the next XF. There are double wishbones (for this one – special thanks) in front of the XE and `integral link` rear suspension in place of a conventional multi-link setup. It has beautiful ride/handling balance, comfortable inside, great to drive and has a low CO2 emissions. My choice – 2.0 Diesel.

Mazda MX-5

Talking about the finalists of this car of the year contest I would like to say – Mazda MX 5 and others. Yes, I hate this cheaper plastic interior but I love this car which returns us to excellent natural driving emotions we forgot by modern cars last time, unfortunately. Thanks to every one who makes MX5, beautiful looks, great agile handling and comfortable for every day using value for money roadster. My choice – 2.0-litre version with a limited-slip differential and bigger brakes.

Opel Astra

“Opel Astra scores with excellent quality and design, groundbreaking on board and comfortable drive. Plus two body versions, efficient engines (with the fabulous new three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine) and well priced as ever. Less weighted, smaller outside and bigger inside new Astra has lighter steering and more positive than in the current Astra; well weighted, with good speed, fine accuracy and nice grip, despite on the same a torsion beam with a Watt’s linkage, which one cheaper than four-link rear suspension but tuned well. There is no any special in new car. Everything well done and only one disappointment – there is no 3dr version and … Opel left Russia… My choice – 1.4 turbo. For more info follow this link: https://youtu.be/T-sTJbgQVh8”

Skoda Superb

Superb is second time among the finalists. Seven years ago Skoda was my a favorite, today is not… Of course, Superb one of the best usable car with 8-engines choice, Estate version, more roomy inside than predecessor and with biggest boot space in class. But unlike the previous model the new Lambo-looking design – cold as iceberg in the ocean, though with the better proportions. No emotions, only business. Meanwhile, according to its practical qualities new Superb is a worthy car and the best value for money choice. My version- 2.0 TDI.

Volvo XC90

“The XC90 is the first car to sit on Volvo’s new modular platform, dubbed SPAR (Scalable Product Architecture). All new Volvo XC90 blazes a trail with its technology, efficiency, style and safety, quality interior, safety and luxury kit, comfy ride. By first impression, the new Volvo XC90 is visually less exciting than its predecessor but better driving than previous SUV, despite on 4 -cyl. engines only. High-speed ride was improved as well as a better secondary town ride. Thanks for big busy touch screen, but using him, you are losing (for a split second) the visual control over the road. My choice – D5 and R-Design style. For more info link: https://youtu.be/LUiHRFLvmoc”

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Fifty paces away, and I hardly distinguish the new Audi A4, the best Passat ever, from its predecessor. I`d rather give more points to Jaguar XE — despite its miserly set of engines, less impressive quality and its addiction to reduce the radius of fast bends. Jaguar has its own character.

BMW 7 Series

Should I vote for BMW just because the use of new light-weight materials and modern electronics if the seventh series has only now approached to Mercedes S-Class, the undisputed leader of the genre? The similar story of Astra and its fine-tuned three-cylinder engines: a couple of years ago I had more or less the same experience with the Ford Focus.

Mazda MX-5

My Car of this boring Year is the most impractical, but the most joyful Mazda MX-5 — the only car that really embody why it still makes sense to get behind the wheel instead of taking a train, a plane or a taxi.

Skoda Superb

Skoda Superb has demonstrated a progress, but it has lost a unique charm of predecessor with its unusually long roof line and magic but practical fourth/fifth door (by the way, my Car of the Year-2009). A weak point of suspension is the trend of secondary oscillations on uneven coating.

Volvo XC90

Volvo XC90 successfully demonstrates that even this «heavy» segment can go ahead with four-cylinder engines especially with the help from electric motor in a plug-in hybrid combination of T8, but I can hardly recognize its strong class leadership in ergonomics, handling or dynamics.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

I wonder if the new Audi A4 actually disappointed some of the loyal followers of this German brand with it`s “new old” external design, in spite of it`s completely new interior. The new A4 is noticeably more spacious, with excellent ergonomics and also has many, though mostly optional, safety and user minded systems. This must be one of the quietest cars inside the cabin, thanks to excellent soundproofing, even if a diesel engine happens to be under the bonnet.

BMW 7 Series

BMW 7-Series is the most expensive car among the 2016 finalists. While, possibly, not bringing many visual novelties on the outside, the interior is truly exciting. Prospective owners can have virtually anything they could wish for within the realms of contemporary automotive solutions. Just as well, as such a car will mostly remain rather a distant dream instead of a realistic opportunity of ownership.

Jaguar XE

Jaguar XE is the only totally new car among this year`s finalists. It appeals and is visually attractive, incorporates numerous new technological solutions and also comes with different drives, engines and transmissions. Any car of such a premium positioning must be also exemplary in the area of noise suppression. Which XE is not. Especially not when fitted with a diesel engine where all the typical noises are too obvious. Not only, whenever the engine starts or the auto Start-Stop system performs its task, the whole car judders and shakes almost violently.

Mazda MX-5

Within this year`s competition is the new Mazda MX-5 a real refreshment. A “toy” that has managed to exhilarate old and young audience for over 25 years. It also continues to attract many who would, generally, not be even interested in this kind of a car. The latest, 4th generation of the MX-5 impresses not just with it`s looks, but also an excellent suspension, nowhere near as firm and “demanding” as before. The new MX-5 is, thanks to all the positive changes, now a most interesting consideration also for less experienced drivers. Bravo!!

Opel Astra

Astra is a car which manages to bring many little sweeteners from the prestige category into the middle class. An intent worthy of a compliment, meaning that, even a well equipped Astra, does not cost more than its main competitors. Not even when matrix LED headlights, massaging front seats and all the available safety and assistance systems, as well as with new, technologically advanced, engines are included. I like the excellent 1-litre petrol engine in particular.

Skoda Superb

One look at the old vs. new generation of the Superb says everything. The new Superb is aesthetically light years ahead of the predecessor, regardless of whether one compares the saloon or estate variant. A vast selection of engines, drive systems and transmission, as well as advanced systems are offered to prospective buyers. However, every coin has two sides – Superb is no longer as keenly priced as it used to be.

Volvo XC90

At the launch of the XC90, Swedish manufacturer claimed it meant a beginning of a new era for Volvo. The new XC90 is very much a result of all their knowledge, even if it does not particularly impress with technology or, for Volvo, traditionally advanced safety. Instead, it looks very nice indeed and is, for me, one of the better looking car of the year. Sadly, also one of the more expensive ones.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Audi has done an excellent job with this new generation of its midsize sedan. The new A4 shows a new platform, less weight and it is even more refined than its predecessors. Moreover, it features plenty of Hi-Tech innovations. It provides up to 30 new devices (some of them already seen in the new Q7) to be more efficient, comfortable and safe. But, in my opinion, it is just a luxury and improved version of the VW Passat which was already awarded last year.

BMW 7 Series

Surely, it will be a desired car for many people. Partly manufactured with carbon fibre, the BMW 7 SERIES provides a lot of comfort, functionalities, luxury items and driving assistance, some of them in an autonomous way. This car can even “reads” and understands driver signs. Although it is a big sedan it can be driven as a sports car. Its main disadvantage is the price: the cheapest version costs about 100.000 Euros.

Jaguar XE

It will not be as sold as its competitors from BMW, Audi or Mercedes. And this is one of its main strong points. It is also welcome its sporty design and behaviour on the road, the use of aluminium in its body shell and the new family range of engines. This Jaguar is good value for money regarding its equipment and price, but overall not much better than its competitors. And it does not show a real technological revolution, either.

Mazda MX-5

A car 100% designed for enjoyment and pleasure, thanks to its perfect driver`s position, lightweight, enough-powered engine, rear traction and improvements made in the chassis. Mazda has not forgotten to pay attention to other items and devices related to comfort, communications and safety either. It is a pity that it offers only 2 seats with poor boot capacity, because even the price is quite good.

Opel Astra

It brings some innovations and it is extremely good value for money. Just what the award asks for. I would like to underline its LED lights, the OnStar System or its ergonomic and excellent seats. It has also improved other issues, such as weight, ergonomics and behaviour. It takes advantage of downsizing engines, but with no alternative strategies. The diesel engines could be a little more refined.

Skoda Superb

Due to its interior roominess, it can be used as a Prime-Minister car. This new generation also shows an attractive shape and design. But these are its solely contributions. The rest of the topics to be evaluated –engines, equipment, platform- were already considered last year with the awarded Volkswagen Passat.

Volvo XC90

It took the Swedish brand a long time to renew this SUV, but the final result is superb, sided with the new car industry era. Despite its large size, the car is really efficient thanks to the weight reduction, the use of the latest four-cylinder engines or the creation of a plug-in version. Everything is new in this Volvo XC90, emphasizing its quality, equipment and safety systems. It would be my COTY 2016, the first SUV to receive the award, if it were not for the price.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Interesting, with an exterior design continuity little daring. Interior well done, attractive. Endowed with many technological elements for safety and driving aids and a variety of petrol and diesel powerful engines and low consumption. Saloon and wagon, manual and automatic transmissions.

BMW 7 Series

Elegant design, superior comfort and high technology in all sections. It emphasizes comfort it offers good handling for a car of great dimensions and weight. Range of powerful and quiet engines. Maybe value for money is right, but the price is the main handicap.

Jaguar XE

Great proportions, nice body made of aluminum monocoque and sporty design. The cabin has a good driving position, but the capacity is small compared to its competitors. Intuitive InControl touch infotainment system, interesting petrol engines; diesel, unrefined and little bit noisy.

Mazda MX-5

Dynamic, fun, light and very pleasant to drive. It is an sporty car that conveys good feelings, faithful to the original model. Only has two petrol engines, the 2.0 highly recommended, offering a complete equipment-oriented sportiness. Very small cabin and luggage capacity limited to what is necessary for the trip.

Opel Astra

Improvement in all his predecessor items. Lighter, efficient and functional, has interesting technological features aimed at safety, comfort and driver assistance systems, as Intellilux matrix Led system or AGR seats. New small displacement engines and low consumption in petrol and diesel. Capacity boot lower than competitors.

Skoda Superb

MQB platform 80 mm longer, which allows a very spacious interior, especially legroom in the rear seats. It maintains practicality with solutions “Simply Clever” and has a wide range of efficient engines, transmission types and two body styles, saloon and wagon bodies. Huge luggage capacity.

Volvo XC90

It maintains the style of the previous XC90, with a very modern design, lighter body and only 2.0-liter engines in petrol and diesel four-cylinder, even in the Twin Drive T8 409 hp. Very broad and technological Interior, equipped with luxury finish, standard features and good connectivity. The air suspension ensures comfortable and individual driving style.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Is the most advanced sedan in its class thanks to the new MLB architecture. Driving this car is a true pleasure, either fast or slowly. Audi A4 offers a big number of interesting Driver Assistance Systems, as the Predictive Efficiency Assistant with freewheeling function, and very good engines as the Miller low consumption 2.0 TFSI Ultra.

BMW 7 Series

Maybe it is the best car on a world without price limits. Incredible dynamic performances from chassis as well as lightweight construction permit a new driving experience on this size. Refined engines of different types and unlimited technologies are some reasons to push-it on the top level.

Jaguar XE

This car raises passions by style, sound V6 engine, and feeling at the wheel, but must improve in some aspects. Maybe it is a little bit radical when you are looking for smooth driving; 2.0 Diesel engine could be most refined; and ergonomics could be better.

Mazda MX-5

New generation MX-5 is the result of Mazda technological development during many years, sometimes against others most diffused trends. The result is a competitive range, now crowned with this funny car, helping us rediscover driving emotions with an attractive value for money.

Opel Astra

New Astra is not just a very serious leading aspirant to the compact segment, but also a compound of new technologies at affordable prices, as OnStar connectivity or LED IntelliLux systems. Special mention to the new range of engines: from the very, very frugal Diesel 1.6 to the brilliants petrol 1.0, 1.4 and 1.6.

Skoda Superb

This third generation Superb lives up to its name, and also exhibits a design without complex against most relevant competitors. It is the most beautiful Skoda of the modern age. Although, there is nothing new under the skin: it is the Czech version of the Volkswagen Passat.

Volvo XC90

XC90 will be remembered as the modern revolution in the Volvo history. Technically it opens a new era and a large way for upcoming models. Architecture, engines, safety, design and electrification show a big step forward and put-it at the highest levels of this exclusive category.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Great sedan! The best of the Q7 in safety and comfort, moves down to the A4 , improving the previous generation in dynamics. It could be better with a better luggage space and an exciting design.

BMW 7 Series

Perfect technological showcase. No one can offer more; its handling is quite agile, despite its measures, but its price stops it from being in a higher position.

Jaguar XE

Interesting attempt to challenge German Premium sedans, although it is still a step below the A4, especially in terms of mechanical and interior refinement and quality settings.

Mazda MX-5

It is a toy and everyone loves it. Emotion, passion, design… but its limited functionality and only two possibilities about engines, finally detracts points.

Opel Astra

The most balanced car inside this list. There is a great improvement over the previous generation, solving a lot of mistakes. Good engines and connectivity, with one of the best safety portfolio in its segment. The car boot would be better.

Skoda Superb

Great car in quality, handling… and space. The only problem is, the Passat won last year.

Volvo XC90

A remarkable car that has had the misfortune to be presented while projecting a strong rival (Audi Q7). Exciting experience referring the inside design and quality. Interesting plug-in hybrid variant.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Audi has managed just right in desing but necessary to make an exceptional car. Technologically it has taken a huge leap to be a more premium car than ever. The engine range is very logical and successful. It`s a car with a very good feeling.

BMW 7 Series

Has it all. Luxury, desing, technology, safety, performance, details of first level, large interior space, comfort (front and rear seats), large trunk and high performance engines. It is like a `Titanic` automotive able to seduce anyone. His only `but` is the price. It has a lot of everything good and has a lot of interesting options.

Jaguar XE

Jaguar has shrunk a little XF for good car access to the brand (with a very good price). A good idea because it offers similar sensations but with somewhat less performance space. In the engine range, the 340 hp has in my opinion excessive engine, but it`s fun. Diesel 180 hp is a delight.

Mazda MX-5

The `Miata` is a joy to enjoy sporty driving and have a convertible at the same time. Not very large, and tall people can become uncomfortable. It highlighted by the sporty design and a performance dream. Two petrol engines of 131 and 160 hp. The gearbox is a delight.

Opel Astra

Seamless, with a design slightly updated but without breaking with tradition, away from revolution. Excellent dynamic performance. It is a shining Opel for its performance and general environmental requirements, driver satisfaction and price, It is a compact 100% with chances to win.

Skoda Superb

Simply Clever logic applies to the Superb at its best, either with the station wagon and sedan. It noted for its spacious interior, cockpit and trunk. The engine range it`s correct but not hugue. Elegantly and with an excellent price. It has a boring and bland design inside.

Volvo XC90

It has completely changed the image we have of the brand. It is the first step towards a bright future. It is a good 4×4 with excellent performance and luxury finishes. The hybrid version T8 is a wonder of softness and strength at same time. Its price is interesting. Safety, desing and technical innovation are his strontg points.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

A real showcase of technology on wheels, it proposes elements as interesting as the tablets created by Audi, which include antireflective screens and are made with shock resistant materials. Inheritor of a saga born in 1972 with the 80 model, the new A4 has opted not to assume risks in design matters.

BMW 7 Series

Destined to satisfy social elite’s exigencies, it stands out both for his comfortable front seats and for the generous space destined to the back passengers, which is an important factor as many of its owners dispose of a chauffeur service. The BMW Series 7 has achieved to make parking a car from the distance not a science fiction matter anymore.

Jaguar XE

In order to try to compete in equality of conditions with its prestigious rivals of German origin, the British brand needed a car that could be at the reach of a significant sector of the European society. The Jaguar XE is an ideal model for people who seek a luxurious car able to be distinguished at the first sight from its theoretical competitors.

Mazda MX-5

The use of lightweight materials has allowed to reduce the total weight of the car an impressive amount of one hundred kilos, an essential data to upgrade its performance without worrying for the engine. The fourth generation of the Mazda MX-5 deserves to be in the final round to value the 25 years of history accumulated by the antecessors of this Japanese icon.

Opel Astra

From these season’s candidates, it is the one which better adapts to the peculiarities of the Car of the Year prize. Compact model destined to fight for the leadership of sales in Europe, the innovative Opel Astra has champion genes. Thanks to vehicles like this, the technological progresses stop being exclusive property of the high standing models.

Skoda Superb

To awake intense emotions into the car lovers is the pending subject that Skoda is passing with the arrival of its new generation models. Thought for the people that look for a big size sedan and that are not willing to pay a huge amount of money, the Skoda Superb is a car with no rivals.

Volvo XC90

Combination of vanguard technology and daily use functionality, this interesting Swedish vehicle stands out for its design philosophy, which combines simplicity and elegancy. One of the main reasons of the Volvo XC90 sales is the security, which adopts different worldwide novelties aimed to succeed in the future.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The new Audi A4 has been criticized for the lack of new designelements. I can agree but based on the things you don`t see it´s obviously one of the best cars this year. The handling is great, the steering outstanding and the interior is very roomy. A lot of engines and different choises makes it easy to buy the right A4 for you.

BMW 7 Series

Wow! BMW did it again. A lot of new technical features that we probably gonna see in other cars in the coming five years. The 7-serie impressed in the handling test at Sindal Airport during the Tannistest week. The very big car passed the narrow track easy and in high speed. The comfort is among the best in the world.

Jaguar XE

One of the best car when it comes to handling – and that in a field of finalist where handling and steering has been very god all and all. The luxury feeling inside is in line with ha very nice design on the outside. I find the engines a little less effective than the best in class – but the light och stiff chassi is the right base for further improvements. Mazda MX-5 For me this was not a car that qualified for the final. It´s a really fun car to drive and it´s a nice flirt with old times. But car of the year is about development and new outstanding features and when it comes to that Mazda MX5 is not among the seven best this year.

Opel Astra

Together with Mazda MX5 the only small och affordable car among the finalists. Opel hase done a grat job with the new Astra. The steering and handling is great and some of the technical features are world class. I really like the new IntelliLux but the balance in the lane assist proves that Opel are going to chase the premium brands in many years to come.

Skoda Superb

Superb car, especially in terms of interiorspace and practical features. Better styling than before. Better then some of the more premium brands. The second car that I did´nt vote for to the final seven, it´s to much the same car as the VW Passat. That said Skoda Superb must be one of the best familycar in many years. Roomy and affordable and with such a nice design both exterior and interior. Great handling and steering, as in every car built on that plattform.

Volvo XC90

It´s easy to say that I give ten points to Volvo just because the car is from Sweden. But – onestly – Volvo took some very bold and crucial decisions when they built the plattform for the 90-series. XC90 proves that they did exactly the right thing. The safety, the interior, the driver interface, the twin engines and battery. It´s world class in many areas and for med Car of the Year 2016.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Overall the new A4 has no weak points – except one. It is safe, nice to drive, offers good comfort and better space, but lacks ability to connect emotionally. Maybe because of the conservative styling?

BMW 7 Series

The introduction of carbon fiber and other weight-saving materials i mass production deserves to be acknowledged. But the 7-series is also an almost perfect compromise between dynamics and comfort. And I just love unnecessary features like Gesture Control!

Jaguar XE

Precise steering, great chassis, but falls behind in other areas. Diesel engines are not refined, interior design does not have the expensive feeling and modern looks you find in competitors, the interior space is limited.

Mazda MX-5

With this car I have a love affair. It is engineered in a way it almost could be the predecessor to the first generation of the MX-5. But of course too limited to be Car of the Year.

Opel Astra

It is tempting, for once, quoting an advertising campaign. The new Astra really annoys the Upper Class, with several strong features, great styling and better engines.

Skoda Superb

Good car for families, with lots of space and good safety. However, it does not bring much new to the market and is very much a version of last year’s Winner.

Volvo XC90

Everything is new, from platform to engines to styling, and everything is impressing. Under Chinese ownership Volvo has found their own road, without abandoning the brand’s most important asset: safety.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The cautious exterior design is compensated by a state of the art interior. Under the shell we also find an advanced construction. Security and equipment are on top. Excellent handling and a lot of premium feel at a decent price.

BMW 7 Series

Impressive driving refinement, high technical level and superb quality down to the last detail. BMW 7 show how well you can build a car in 2016 if you don`t have to worry about the cost. The car is a worthy finalist even though it’s expensive.

Jaguar XE

New Jaguar XE can compete with the best in it’s class in terms of driving dynamics (and sometimes even win). Very nice steering! With modern safety equipment and it’s unique looks the XE may be very successful in a very competitive segment.

Mazda MX-5

A terrific little car that makes every driver happy! Of course, hopelessly impractical, but many are willing to overlook things for the pleasure of driving the Mazda MX-5. It is unfortunate that Mazda choose not to equip the MX- 5 with AEB.

Opel Astra

Lower weight and smaller footprint while maintained – and in some cases even improved – interior space. The new Astra is a modern mid-size hatchback at its best. Extra plus for connectivity and the active LED headlights.

Skoda Superb

Generous spaces, highly equipped and all the modern safety systems – the Superb has everything you could wish for in a modern family car in 2016. The fact that it’s based on Volkswagens` successful MQB platform is not a disadvantage. Great value for money!

Volvo XC90

Volvo continues it`s tradition with an extremely high safety and environmental ambition. Along with great roominess, practical features, great comfort, and high end quality design, the new XC90 is by far the most complete candidate for Car of the Year 2016. The price is high but the Volvo XC90 is a car that many wants to own.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Audi has now perfected the A4 into an extremely good car. It`s a really successful overall package – no more, no less.

BMW 7 Series

The new 7 Series combines everything that state-of-the-art automotive technology has to offer and scores top marks in all areas. What`s particularly impressive about this car is the perfect mix of luxury, travel comfort and agility – but it comes at a price.

Jaguar XE

This model is Jaguar`s second attempt to gain a foothold in the hard-fought medium-size luxury sedan market. The lightweight design not only has a positive effect on unladen weight and fuel consumption, it has also paid off in terms of better torsional rigidity and handling. New drive and bodywork options could make it even more attractive.

Mazda MX-5

The Mazda MX-5 has for a long time been the perfect roadster at an attractive price. The fourth generation of this two-seater has been further enhanced for added driving pleasure – but without adding a high price ticket or more engine power.

Opel Astra

The Astra finally lays to rest the prejudices that have dogged Opel for many years. It`s done this not with a great show of emotion, but with clarity and attention to detail. The car is smaller and lighter and the revamped engines are more energy-efficient. Nevertheless, the Astra offers lots of room, as well as lots of new technology that makes it one of the most modern vehicles in its segment.

Skoda Superb

The Skoda Superb has always offered masses of space. What`s new is the cool exterior and sophisticated interior. The VW modular toolkit couldn`t be put to better use.

Volvo XC90

With the XC90, Volvo has reinvented itself and is making a successful start to a new automotive era. It is turning away from the medium-sized segment to focus on luxury and premium models with the emphasis on high safety standards. The result is pleasing and is a reward for the courage to install only four-cylinder engines in the future.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Looks exactly like the previous A4 – and there is no point for doing redundance in the premium-brand. Inside it is a amazing «computer» – but where is the fun to drive? And where are the Audi-innovations? The handlings is somehow beyond expectations, the pricing far above reasonable.

BMW 7 Series

Jaguar XE

Mazda MX-5

As we are voting for «Car of the Year» and not «Best connected Car of the Year», there can be only one choice: the Mazda MX-5. It is all about driving (and not: to be driven), it is lightweight, everything reduced to the max. Cool design, great handling, efficient engines. And everything for a reasonable price. A car that just makes you smile all day long.

Opel Astra

A good car, much better than the previous generation, lighter, more space, better efficiency. And the democratisation of high-end system and assets is also a bonus. Best seats, but notchy gear-change – at the end just a good car. Still missing the «must have»-factor.

Skoda Superb

The roominess is amazing. And the price is hot. But then? Just another MQB-car, no step forward anymore, technically identic to other VW-Group-products. And the question is: who needs a big car like the Skoda?

Volvo XC90

Outstanding Design. Some clever innovations. Lots of safety. Great interior, very user-friendly. And reasonable downgrading plus electrification of the engines for lower emissions. However, it is a typical SUV which means: too big and too expensive.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

It seems like there is no change at first sight. It is the newest model among its rivals. That gives the opportunity of becoming a more tech oriented car. Although there is not a significant change design has been improved thanks to little touches. Thus the quality feel of the car has been increased. It really feels like a upper class car. Main changes are inside of the car. Every bit of the interior which is touched by driver has been renewed. These changes added the modern and new flavor to the car. Quality materials and finishing are manifesting itself. Moreover, there is no outstanding plus signs out of its features. Driving pleasure is protected.

BMW 7 Series

I didn’t like its exterior design. It looks like a facelifted 5 Series. However the interior quality and design is supreme. As a matter of fact, main changes has been made inside. It seems like BMW engineers thought rear seat passengers much more than the driver. They developed the car with this starting point. 7 Series feels like you are travelling in the first class section of an airplane. The car has the familiar material and craftsmanship quality of BMW. New technology, security and comfort equipment is pushing the limits of its class. However, equipment and price balance is disproportional.

Jaguar XE

A sedan with extremely sportive lines. Sportiveness is not only because of its appearance. It seems like a little brother of XF. It provides a sportive drivability without sacrificing comfort. Although I thought that this car could change the balances in its class. However it can not create its unique character. Many details of interior from the Land Rover, draw attention. Such that you can feel like you are driving a Range Rover Evoque for an instant. That’s why cockpit design is overly under my expectation. The joggle when the start-stop comes in, does not clash a car in this class. It has to make something different to reach its target.

Mazda MX-5

These nothing more to say about it. Its handling ability which was already good is increased. It increased its already good handling ability. Such that, you don’t want the road to finish. It always gives thrill and pleasure to its driver. Rear-wheel drive setup, light bodyweight and high revving base engine is the most important points of the car. It has an aggressive design. Although I found its design odd, I loved it in time. It has modernized with technological equipments. However, it didn’t lost its real DNA. It deserves high point nonetheless, it is not Car of The Year. I choose it as the car of my heart.

Opel Astra

It has a nice design with an upper class appearance. This feeling is not only seen outside but also inside of the car. Interior is thriving for both quality of material and design. A good balance has been achieved when we consider its price, engine choices and equipment levels. Benefit/cost ratio is the biggest positive side of Astra. It shines out with this feature among its rivals. It can become the new king of its class thanks to its new benchmark equipment for both technology and comfort. Moreover Astra makes difference with its technological features. I like the details for the comfort of both driver and passengers.

Skoda Superb

I have heard that some people were surprised when the Superb is announced as one of the 7 finalists. However it deserves all the way to be one of the finalists in COTY. Superb has the most chic design in all Skoda models I have ever seen up to now. Sadly, I can’t say same thing for interior. There is a tasteless cockpit design. It does not match with its unique design but it shines out with roomy interior and especially leg room at the rear seats. This feature makes Superb the class leader but all of these are not enough to be the car of the year. There are variable engine choices to meet the demand of all kind of customer.

Volvo XC90

Volvo changes the description for luxury SUV with its new XC90. It proves a car can be luxury without exaggeration. I love its simple but chic design. The giant SUV shines out with its technology, quality, safety and comfort. Although it is an SUV, it handles like a sedan. Downsized engines can provide the power and efficiency more than I expected. Despite its huge dimensions, defies to rivals thanks to its agility in curves. Hybrid option is a groundbreaking technology for mass production cars. It still seems like a concept technology for me. Although its pearls, high price is the biggest disadvantage of XC90.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Efficiency sportiness and high tech is Audi`s execrable catchphrase for this quite brilliant new version of the best selling A4. Clearly the presence of Quattro four-wheel drive and the best V6 turbodiesel in the business are great come ons, but the two-litre VW Group diesel, is powerful, refined and economical. It`s the refinement which remains in the memory, as well as the weight and accuracy of the steering and precise turn in to corners. Cabins are lovely, of course and there`s a long-legged quality to this terrific car which only occasionally feels bland.

BMW 7 Series

“Sixth-generation of the car that encompasses virtually everything BMW can offer. New weight saving, new cabin design, new hydraulic suspension and new (and very attractive) coachwork. Gesture control, voice control and of course the iDrive capstan control for the driver. Touch screens for rear passengers, remote parking, driver assistant plus, which is a partial autonomous system. Blimey is there anything this BMW won`t do? Ride well at low speeds, it appears, as the wheels clatter along broken gutters. There`s also a driver focus to the compromise that is superfluous given that most examples will be chauffeur driven, but that doesn`t take away from the extraordinary achievement. If you want a gargantuan luxury limo that really goes round corners, this is it.”

Jaguar XE

At last, an executive Jag that can stand toe-to-toe with the Germans. Is it as dynamic as BMW`s 3-series? Not quite. As comfortable and refined as a Mercedes-Benz C-class? Erm no. What the XE is, however is unmistakably a Coventry Cat and more enjoyable for it. On the track (I know it`s not representative, but it`s a good guide), it was achingly good, with a progressive build up to the steering weight, good feedback to the wheel and frankly almost sports-coupé levels of wieldiness. It`s comfortable over long distances and it looks, if not startling, certainly attractive. The new diesel engine is noisy, though and the touch-screen communications and sat nav aren`t very good at all, so not very good, in fact, that they are being changed by the end of the year. Still a very desirable motorcar, but not quite a Car of the Year.

Mazda MX-5

“For the last 27 years there haven`t been many questions about sports cars that couldn`t be answered with three letters and a hyphen; MX-5. Mazda changed the mussed-up hair trade winds when, in 1989, it introduced its little soft-top, two seater modelled on Sixties MG and Lotus models. MX-5 made all its rivals look too big, too heavy, too hard-core and well, too hopeless. Small wonder that with almost a million sales over the years, the MX-5/Miata has become the world`s best-ever selling sports car. So popular, in fact, it`s driven its rivals out of business. Not a single version of this phenomenon has been anything less than stellar, though this Mark IV model is magnificent. Available with 1.5 and 2.o-litre, four-cylinder engines, it is lighter and smaller than its predecessor. The cabin is cramped but comfortable and well made and the engines still set everything tingling when you start up. The dynamics aren`t perfect, there`s an over abruptness about the steering and a damping imbalance from front to rear which keeps you on your toes and makes you drive properly and not muck around with the throttle half way through a bend. But what corking fun, it is. It feels about 80 zillion miles an hour faster than it actually is and is a life-affirming cocktail better than a Jeeves`s pick-you-up, a Viagra-and-peanut butter sandwich, or New Year swim in the Serpentine. “”Do you think it is possible to actually conceive of a way that the MX-5 could win Car of the Year?”” Asked my Russian fellow judge. Can`t think of a better way of making it happen than making it my Car of the Year, so I have…”

Opel Astra

Throwing out the equivalent of two large adults in weight, stiffening the structure, making the body smaller on the outside and bigger on the inside, fitting all-new engines and transmissions with stand-out communications and electronics, has been a simply massive undertaking for Opel/Vauxhall, but the result is more than worth it. Astra flows through bends, breathes over bumps and steers with precision and vim. Not a Focus wannabe, but a Vauxhall, just a much better one. Little things like the Wi-Fi hotspot and the On-Star personal assistant/automatic emergency call out service are likely to become deal breakers for rivals. And more people will enjoy this car than any of the other in the short list, which helps it to joint second on my list.

Skoda Superb

Winter tyres, over large wheels and some quite bad roads took the edge off the very fine ride quality that we know this big Czech possesses. That said, for the money (prices start at £18,640), this is a car like no other, which priorities getting you there comfortably and in safety above all else. The cabin is cavernous and there are occasions when it feels like a wheelbase extension too far, but for the most part the Superb is, well superb. If the French still built big saloons, this is what they`d have to beat.

Volvo XC90

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The fact it made the short list at all shows how far the A4 has come, but to do so in a year of such strong competition is a real achievement for a car that has for too long lagged behind its BMW and Mercedes opposition. Powertrains lead the class for response and refinement, and cabin is up there with the best. Let down only by yet again failing to apply similar standards of excellence to the chassis. With better ride and handling, it could have won.

BMW 7 Series

I`d delighted to see such a car even making the shortlist and there is no doubt at all that – relative to its competition – this is BMW`s best Seven to date. Its improvement comes not from the huge amount of technology it puts at the driver`s disposal, but finally abandoning the conviction that a Seven series must have best in class handling, even at the expense of ride quality. Trading a trait most owners will never need for one they`ll appreciate every day has finally given BMW a world class luxury saloon.

Jaguar XE

In most areas the XE is competitive with the class best. The new Ingenium engine is a little noisy but delivers good performance with outstanding economy. The car looks great inside and out, but the all new infotainment system still lags behind Europe`s best. But for sheer driver appeal, it is the first car I can remember to put clear water between itself and the BMW 3-series. Even at modest speeds it involves and indulges the driver like no similar car, and the faster you go the better it gets, just as a true Jaguar should.

Mazda MX-5

Here, in one small and attractive package is a reminder of what simple driving pleasure should be. A car so clearly conceived, so fastidiously executed in its borderline obsessive drive to excise all excess weight that it is a joy simply to be on board. You don`t need mountain roads or to drive on the limit, just the quality of the gear shift, the sound of the engine and the feel of the steering means it can be enjoyed anywhere. Historically the MX-5 has been a car with very few rivals, and it will be a brave manufacturer indeed which thinks it can better the standard now set.

Opel Astra

I`m still not convinced by the way the interior either looks or works, but in all other regards the new Astra is a triumph. From the fundamentals, such as the look and weight of the car, to the details, such as unrivalled connectivity in the class, it`s clear Opel and Vauxhall have thought far harder than ever before about what really matters to owners in a car such as this. Also it`s engaging to drive and provides ride quality I can barely believe given its relatively unsophisticated rear suspension. The Golf still rules the class, but I`d now place the Astra second, and on a par with the Focus.

Skoda Superb

From tiny city cars to hard core sports cars, I love cars that know what they are for, which is why the Superb makes it so high up my list. It offers interior packaging combined in estate form with luggage space unrivalled in the class and challenged only by now defunct E-class estate. But it`s not just a beast of burden: the Superb quiet, very comfortable and never less than pleasant to drive. No, it`s not cool, it`ll never make your neighbours jealous, but it just works and better than any similar car on sale. Definitively fit for purpose.

Volvo XC90

With a more engaging powertrain and less road noise, the XC90 could have topped my list. Even as it is, the Range Rover Sport is the only car in the class that could be argued to be better. Brilliant looks make no promise the car beneath cannot keep in full. Interior ambiance is wonderful, but it`s also genuinely versatile and functional. You will love it, your kids will love it and both factors will improve immeasurably your quality of life on the road. Most of all though, it shows how very seriously Volvo must now be taken.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

The Audi is a very well-executed car. To a strong platform it adds efficient powertrains, impressive quietness, superb interior quality and a brilliant infotainment interface. But its target audience is people who don`t really enjoy cars. The styling is conservative, even timid, and most versions don`t greatly engage the driver.

BMW 7 Series

The 7-series is another one held back by ultra-conservative styling and muted driver feedback. But its weight-saving measures are admirable. The powertrain, chassis and driver support innovations are bold and effective. And all of this, with the exception of the carbon body elements, will soon be transposed down to cheaper, more widely sold BMWs.

Jaguar XE

This is difficult. For most people I`d actually recommend the Audi over the Jaguar. The Jaguar suffers a noisy diesel engine, a bit of wind rustle at speed, and a clunky infotainment system (which Jaguar acknowledges by planning a new one for 2017). But it`s a joy to drive and beautiful, and those things matter to me personally so I`ve indulged it with an extra point.

Mazda MX-5

Mazda reminds us that driving joy doesn`t depend on having hundreds of horsepower. This little thing is light and simple and, if history shows us anything, cheap to own and reliable. If the chassis calibration was slightly different – to my taste the steering is too twitchy at the beginning and end of a corner – this might have been my top scorer.

Opel Astra

The Astra is merely class-competitive rather than clearly class-leading for dynamics and space. But it`s light and efficient brings some good technologies at low prices. I think its connectivity – OnStar and screen interface – represents a step-change and will be of real benefit to millions of family and business buyers. It looks good too.

Skoda Superb

The Skoda certainly gives huge space and decent quality for the money. But it`s a good car not a great one, and an extended wheelbase hardy counts as an epoch-making innovation. Also, all the other cars on the shortlist are more or less entirely new this year. Not this one.

Volvo XC90

The Volvo is a wonderful family wagon: very well packaged, relaxing and safe, with lovely interior design. Those are obvious, so I`ll point out imperfections. Its much-vaunted screen-based interface doesn`t actually work as well as the Astra`s, in the real world the new engines save less fuel than expected, and the seat-fold mechanisms are fiddly.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

Anyone buying the commendably light A4 will delight in its superbly built cabin, refinement and excellent engines, including the smooth, punchy Miller cycle petrol, with its efficiency advantage over rivals’ fours. Pay £1250 for an autonomous driving bundle, including Traffic Jam Assist and Predictive Efficiency Assistant, which tackles a weak link in the efficiency chain – the driver – through coaching, but irritates with repeated demands to lift off. Maybe let the cruise control take over, because the driving experience left me a bit cold.

BMW 7 Series

Limousine meets Tamiya, thanks to the part-carbon 7-series’ remote parking skill. And its self-driving capability allows you to navigate motorway congestion with only an occasional touch of the wheel: hugely satisfying. The rear tablet is a must, but Gesture Control is a limited gimmick for now. Drivetrains are potent and hushed, and I prefer the tauter body control compared with an S-class. Roll on the roll out of some of this tech to the next 5-series.

Jaguar XE

Aside from the MX-5, no other shortlisted car is so overtly sporty. Flick the steering wheel, and the XE’s nose dances to your commands. With its 50:50 weight distribution, firm but supple ride and low-set driving position, it’s my favourite car to drive in its class. But there are demerits too: the diesel engine is raucous, the cockpit feels a generation behind the Audi’s, and rear space is tight. Euro NCAP rates its active safety equipment; automatic braking is standard.

Mazda MX-5

Lighter and smaller than before. Fantastic value, starting at £18,495 and less than £300 a month to lease. The high revving, 1.5-litre engine and precise six-speed ‘box are a joy. The rear end feels a bit unruly at times, so drivers need to be on their game. And you don’t even have to compromise on gadgetry, with Mazda’s excellent infotainment system. It’s terrific fun: who needs a supercar?

Opel Astra

The Astra is a stepchange for Vauxhall: a new architecture that sheds 130kg, out with fripperies like adaptive damping for a properly sorted suspension providing splendid ride quality and refinement, and a pretty engaging steer too. Carbon emissions are low and build quality high. An intuitive touchscreen with crisp graphics, DAB radio, Bluetooth and CarPlay/Android Auto is standard, the second trim level (still under £16k) includes sat-nav, and options are competitively priced. Buyers will feel like they’ve got a great car at great value, and amen to that.

Skoda Superb

For £90 more than the MX-5, you can have a base Skoda Superb. This car packs as much rear space as the 7-series, and comes as a supremely capacious wagon too: that’s practicality sorted. It handles tidily, and cruises with very little road or wind noise. Adaptive damping is a £700 option that offers a good range of character, sharpening up the handling in Sport or becoming a blissfully pillowy barge in Comfort. The Superb is around £5000 cheaper than the equivalent VW Passat, yet it doesn’t lack for technology: TV tuner, cellphone Smartlink (CarPlay works more intuitively on Skoda’s touchscreen than in the Audi or Volvo), heated rear seats, dual-clutch gearbox, all-wheel drive. It is genuinely Superb, in a very rational way, and it’s my Car of the Year.

Volvo XC90

The XC90 has become very large and cumbersome; it corners with noticeable roll, and at times is afflicted by a fidgety secondary ride. The mandatory four cylinders haven’t neutered performance, although they can get a little stressed when extended. Regardless, the XC90 is a loveable car, and provides the shortlist’s most welcoming family environment. The airy, seven seat cabin is tastefully designed and beautifully trimmed, and largely decluttered thanks to the handsome but at times fiddly touchscreen. It was also the safest car Euro NCAP tested in 2015.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

I like this car a great deal. A particularly excellent drivetrain, and competent elsewhere.

BMW 7 Series

A fine car, with excellent refinement. Its perennial problem remains the existence of the Mercedes S-class.

Jaguar XE

Class-leading ride, handling and steering characteristics, though elsewhere it doesn`t challenge the best in the sector.

Mazda MX-5

Odd to find a sports car on the CotY shortlist, but when it comes to technical innovation you cannot overlook its lightness and it offers excellent value for a car of its type. And it`s great fun to drive.

Opel Astra

I am a fan of how little it weighs compared to other cars in its segment, and it has fine connectivity.

Skoda Superb

Does everything a car of its type should, and at excellent value.

Volvo XC90

An easy car to like; great seats, driving position and a one of the finest interiors in production. Not without faults: the diesel is a little gruff, ride can be harsh and it`s quite wide. But everywhere else it`s exceptional.

My judgement is based on following grounds:

Audi A4

It looks uncannily similar to the last one but is incrementally better in every way. It was also a pleasure to test versions on the comfortable wheel and suspension combinations that many UK buyers inexplicably shun. A good car and beautifully made, but it`s no easier to love than an expensive refrigerator.

BMW 7 Series

This a feast of sybaritic high technology and a fine luxury carriage, but it doesn`t do anything that rivals can`t also do. It`s an imposing car but without a photograph to remind me I can`t easily picture it. In a decade`s time it will be forgotten, and for that reason it can`t be Car of the Year.

Jaguar XE

Being a Brit, I really want this car to succeed. Being a COTY journalist, I know it should be better. The diesel engine and manual gearbox are mediocre, the sportiest V6 version`s ride is too unyielding (especially for a Jaguar) and the infotainment system already seems dated. But it looks good outside and inside, and is great fun to drive.

Mazda MX-5

A Car of the Year should advance the art of its category and improve its owner`s quality of life. The brilliant MX-5 does both. Driving it is a life-affirming, sense-stimulating joy, an antidote to conformity and the spectre of autonomous driving. It`s smaller, lighter and more frugal than the last one, and better in every way. For me, it wins.

Opel Astra

There`s much to like here. The Astra brings high-end technology to an affordable car range in way that rivals do not, it has a competitive engine range and it`s smaller, lighter and better-packaged than the bloated old one. But rivals still outshine it in driving dynamics, and a car not at the top of its class can`t really be a Car of the Year.

Skoda Superb

I hadn`t put this on my shortlist but I should have done. The Superb is superb. It`s beautifully made and finished, it rides smoothly and handles with agility, it has a lot of space and is very good value. Why spend all that money on an Audi A4 when this does as good a job for less? A Skoda to covet, an idea once unthinkable, and a very smart buy.

Volvo XC90

If you must have a big SUV, this temple to Scandinavian interior design is one of the best. The infotainment screen is inspired, the top model`s hybrid system works very well, and this bluff-looking car is deceptively agile. I admire Volvo`s devotion to efficient four-cylinder engines to make a responsible SUV. And it looks like a proper Volvo.
