Candidate 2027: Volkswagen T-Roc, more than ever, “the Golf of SUVs”

New generation, new look, same identity. The new T‑Roc reinforces the brand’s traditional commitment to logical, high‑quality driving.

Amid an automotive news cycle dominated by electrification, regulatory debates and long-term strategies, one could easily have overlooked something rather important: the arrival of an all-new Volkswagen T-Roc. That would have been a mistake, because this model puts things firmly back into perspective.

New generation, new face: the T-Roc asserts its identity at first glance. There are no barely noticeable tweaks here, as sometimes seen at Volkswagen. The silhouette gains presence, the lines are sharper, the expression more confident. Nothing dramatic, admittedly, but that’s precisely why it works. Volkswagen still masters the art of designing cars that age gracefully without ever feeling outdated. This second-generation T-Roc embraces a form of functional discretion, reminiscent of the best Golf generations. No flashiness, just a coherent whole that has reassured and appealed to a broad audience for decades.

Feedback acknowledged

Inside, the progress is even more evident. Volkswagen has clearly listened to the criticism aimed at some of its recent models. Material quality and overall presentation are once again on the rise, a reminder that within the group, Volkswagen — not… Skoda — is supposed to set the benchmark. Ergonomics have also been simplified.

Digital interfaces and touch controls are still present, but they no longer dominate. Physical buttons are back where they actually matter and, almost magically, everything becomes more intuitive, more legible, more natural. You immediately feel at home, with no learning curve required. Rational, just as one would expect from Volkswagen.

As for space, all occupants enjoy more than adequate room. On paper, the boot offers 475 litres, yet it feels more generous than that. In any case, its shape is practical, and family holidays seem perfectly within reach.

Everything in balance

On the road, the T-Roc delivers exactly what you expect from a well-bred Volkswagen. In the 1.5 eTSI 150 hp version tested here, it neither tries to impress nor provoke. That is simply not its mission. Not that it is dull — far from it. Push it along a winding road and it follows willingly, without complaint, like a disciplined soldier. But don’t expect it to egg you on for more. That’s not its nature. Instead, it strikes a balance between secure handling, carefully tuned comfort, precise steering and consistently predictable behaviour.

As we’ve often said about a certain… Golf, none of the “dials” are pushed to extremes. Comfort is not prioritised over dynamics, nor the other way around. Everything sits neatly in the middle. And that is precisely why the T-Roc is so easy to drive: relaxed, confidence-inspiring, and reassuring. It delivers that very Volkswagen feeling of being in a well-engineered car — one that never surprises, but never disappoints either.

This T-Roc does not attempt to reinvent the wheel. It embraces continuity, almost reassuringly so, at a time when the automotive world sometimes seems intent on reinventing itself every morning, to the point of exhaustion. In that context, the T-Roc brings things back under control. It takes over the role once held by the Golf and becomes the benchmark of its segment. It does everything right, without overstatement, leaving rivals free to offer more radical, sportier or more eccentric alternatives.

Ultimately, this new T-Roc is more than just an improved version of its predecessor. It feels like a beacon in the storm, reminding us that in the rush toward the future, we almost forgot the basics. And, reassuringly, it seems that other manufacturers may soon remember them too.
